I would like to get to know Dream Theater's music - my teacher played with them at Radio City Music Hall the other week and said it was an amazing experience. Can anyone suggest a good first album for a Dream Theater newbie?

Scenes from a Memory is probably one of their most classic sounding albums. It's a very nice balance between their heavy and more melodic sides. "Home" is also one of the greatest songs ever written. The "plotline" (it is nominally a rock opera) is a little bizarre and hard to follow, but the music is awesome.

If, after listening to that you like their harder stuff better, buy Train of Thought. If you like their more melodic stuff better, buy Octavarium. If you want something with a similar balance, buy Images and Words.

I don't know what song that is, but it's not on any of Images and Words, Scenes from a Memory, Octavarium, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence or Train of Thought. So that eliminates about half their discography.

The song that they go into at the end of the video is "Caught in a Web" - Track #2 on the "Awake" disc.

I haven't heard much of them...they are considered a Metal band? If so, they have the lamest Metal band name since Rainbow.

Interesting. No where in this thread did anyone mention or imply that DT was metal, so it makes one wonder what exactly a statement like that out of the blue is trying to incite. Also, if one is unaware of a thing, how does one actually form the opinion that it is "lame"?

Dream Theater is considered progressive rock. They have a few songs that you could easily call metal if you heard it in a total vacuum, but it's not their dominant sound. I think you'd probably agree, though, Dream Theater is a very good name for a progressive rock band.

It seems like in every thread remotely about metal, Derwood is sure to be there crapping on one of my favorite bands. (I suppose only Dream Theater and Opeth, and they just happen to be two of my faves.) I hate arguing about genres, but it seems to me, and seems to be most commonly said, that Dream Theater is the quintessential example of "progressive metal".

i only asked (snarky as my question may have been) because Dream Theater is almost always mentioned in Metal threads on this board.

As for Opeth, I don't hate them. I really want to like them as I find them extremely talented musically, but the grunty/screamy vocals turn me off.

I will DL some Dream Theater

I've just started listening to them starting with Scenes From A Memory, amazing. Dream Theater really is the perfect name for this band and what they try to reflect through their music from what I've listened to so far.

Any recommendations for what album i should go for next?

Images and Words was a great album.

I have a love/hate thing with DT. I love their heavier songs but they can go from kick ass to suck ass in a split second. I wish they would just drop the 'pretty' stuff and keep the melodic metal sound that makes the stuff on images and words so great.

Their drummer, Mike Portnoy is one of the top 5 drummers over the span of rock music.

has Portnoy drummed for other bands? I've definitely heard of him, but I don't recall it being in connection with Dream Theater

He's been in Dream Theater since before it was called Dream Theater (it was called Majesty before; is that any better? ).. but he's worked on some side projects like OSI, Transatlantic, and Liquid Tension Experiment (a side project of 3/5 of DT).

I have the same issue with Opeth, Derwood. If I could remove the vocals, I'd love the sound. I just can't get into the growling thing.

Of course, that's why they made Damnation, so you can get the instrumentals without the growling. Check it out.

getting over the vocals will open a whole new world of music to you.

in fact, i'm still "getting over the vocals" with great bands like Enslaved. it's a matter of time, patience, and no expectations.

but anyway, this thread is for dream theater -- a change of seasons is the best 23 minute song ever.
