Thrash Metal?

I'm looking for a certain genre of music. I like "metal" but I think it's too wide of a genre for what I'm looking for. Specifically, old-school Metallica (songs like Battery, Master of Puppets, For Whom the Bell Tolls, etc.), Slayer (I've listened to a lot of their stuff recently and it's basically what I'm looking for), and any other band that sounds like the aforementioned. What I'm NOT looking for is crap like Pantera, Ozzy + Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, or anything else that is in that state of mind. I don't like raw screaming or the Throat Cancer metal like someone mentioned in the other threads. What I like most about the genre is the really fast guitar playing that is evident in the older Metallica and Slayer songs.

Anyone know what genre I'm talking about? I thought it was Thrash Metal, but someone mentioned Pantera and Black Sabbath being in that genre...so I'm not really sure (I can't stand that crap). What other bands sound like Slayer and Metallica? Thanks for your time!!

PS: I REALLY like St. Anger, Metallica's newest album. Anything that sounds similar would go over well also!!

Tough. I know exactly what you mean - you want some sort of Melodic Thrash.

Have you tried early Testament?

Derwood 03-27-2006 02:35 PM

please don't reccomend Opeth or Dream Theater to this guy, even thouhj I know someone is dying to do so...

mrklixx 03-27-2006 08:38 PM

Here's a list for you:

And while every one of those bands may not be what you are looking for, it certainly gives you a launching point.

Anthrax and Megadeth. Both are great Thrash Metal bands and Megadeth features Dave Mustaine, who was the lead guitarist for Metallica before Kill 'em All was released.

True, they both follow the genre. I personally hate the singer for Anthrax, as I think he tries to sing too "pretty" for the music. It's like a hair metal band singer on a thrash metal band's album. I'm not a huge Mustaine fan either, but they've got a lot of fans and fit the description

There were two different singers with Anthrax. I think you're talking about Joey Belladonna. Look for the stuff with John Bush, I tend to prefer the stuff he sang anyway. They also had him sing some of the older stuff that Joey originally sang on the "Greater of Two Evils" cd.

samcol 03-28-2006 04:51 PM

Definetly pick up peace sells, so far so good so what, and rust in peace, maybe countdown and youthanasia too from megadeth. Mustaines voice isn't really screaming it's just that he sucks at singing at takes a bit to get used to

Basically the big ones for thrash that I'm away of are Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and like others have mentioned Testament and Anthrax. Maybe try Overkill and Exodus too.

Check out a genre called Power Metal too. It's basically very fast, melodic guitars with very melodic singing too which is what seperates it from thrash metal, also the lyrics and keys tend to be more uplifting than dark and depressing as in thrash metal. Currently my favorite band in this genre is an Italian band called Rhapsody if you want an example.

Redjake 03-29-2006 12:52 PM

Rhapsody is excellent. Manowar. Thy Majesty. I think you would like all of these.

Derwood 03-29-2006 01:54 PM

ha, manowar. "If you're not into metal, you can kiss my ass!" Best lyric ever

manowar songs make me laugh out loud on a regular basis. this guy has an incredible voice, and when that perfect voice of his sings something so over the top and epic, it makes it 20 times better.

Why aren't we supposed to be recommending Dream Theater or Opeth? Dream Theater I guess isn't hard enough, but Opeth certainly isn't all that far out of line.

my comment stemmed from the fact that no one can make a thread about music without those two bands being mentioned, not from their relevancy to this particular topic

Plus you can't talk metal without arguing about which of the dozens of different sub categories of metal a band fits in and why slipknot sucks.

you're all over the place, buddy. what is the "state of mind" that links pantera, ozzy, sabbath, iron maiden, ac/dc? politics? booze? women? faux satanism? pot? american indians? how does metallica and slayer not fit in with these guys? since when did ozzy/sabbath, iron maiden, or ac/dc contain "raw screaming"? i don't even think phil's vocals in pantera, especially on cowboys from hell, are terribly "extreme" by modern standards - pretty much on par with tom araya and james hetfield's vocals.

your taste is your taste, but it's kinda hard to make recommendations when we can't follow your reasoning.

leftyderek 03-30-2006 11:26 PM

Hmm, although I am not a big Metallica fan, as far as I remember songs like Master of Puppets, Battery sound pretty different from the album St. Anger.

About the Power Metal suggestion- Yeah Rhapsody's pretty good. You can also look for a side-project thing called Avantasia. They have two albums in total I believe. Hm. Power Metal. I guess things like Nightwish would be too far away from old Metallica (or even from St. Anger)... then again wouldn't there be too many synth stuff in those? I guess he is looking for something with just vocal, guitars, bass and drum kit... I don't know. Nightwish is really great though.

Btw... actually what's wrong with Iron Maiden? Talking about fast guitar... it's hard not to think of Iron Maiden (or am I being stupid now?).
(And come on, Opeth and Dream Theater are just too far away from Metallica...:D)

kutulu 03-31-2006 12:33 PM

How about Flotsam and Jetsam? Newsted used to play with those guys.
There is also Sacred Reich.
Grip Inc. is a great band featuring Slayer's drummer (Dave Lombardo).
What about COC (Corrision of Conformity)? They sure aren't thrash but if you like the Load-St. Anger era you'd prbably dig them too. Pepper (guitar, vox) and Het influenced either other quite a bit.
The later Sentenced albums (Down - Funeral Album) sound a lot like metallica from the Black Album and on.

skinnymofo 04-01-2006 11:22 AM

Stormtroopers of Death are pretty damn fast, its basically the anthrax guys with a roadie singer.
theres always Lemmy and Motorhead for the original speedy stuff
besides the 2 i just added and the ones listed above, im stumped on what exactly your looking for and what to suggest

Derwood 04-01-2006 12:24 PM

Dream Theater is quite possibly the least metal band name since Rainbow

Okay, I'll admit, the only other time I had heard of them was when they toured with Megadeth, and when I saw them the only thing I could think was, "is that House on the keyboards?"

Keep in mind that I like everything from Master of Puppets back and St. Anger. Not really anything in between. Black and Load are waaaaay not what I'm looking for.

Thanks for the recommendations guys!! I know St. Anger isn't even on the same scale as what I was trying to get across...it was just a bonus if there was any other bands that sound like it (I'm a huge fan of St. Anger...probably the only fan of St. Anger). Keep the suggestions coming!!

I haven't noticed that until you pointed it out...

CyCo PL 04-08-2006 01:40 AM

I know you said no Pantera, but if you haven't heard Cowboys from Hell, you should check that out. It's a completely different sound from all of pantera's later stuff. You might wanna check out some old Sepultura, specifically the Schizophrenia, Beneath the Remains, and Arise albums. Everything after that is a lot less "thrashy" and heavier and more hardcore sounding. Might also want to check out some of the german thrash metal bands, like Sodom, Destruction, or Kreator.

If you want to hear bands that sound like St. Anger, check out Slipknot, since that's who Metallica was trying to rip off when they made that album. :(

Also, I don't know if anybody has said it, but Dragonforce is an amazing speed/power metal band. They really transcend the genre of metal and are just in a category of their own--the awesome category. I have friends that hate metal that love Dragonforce because they're just crazy good.

Dawson70 04-08-2006 09:36 AM

Maybe a band called Venaculas is something your looking for. They are considered in the Aggro genre.

ironchefkorea 04-09-2006 09:03 AM

Unearth - The Oncoming Storm

younger, more on the screamy side, but very fast guitars, very technical. I think you'll like if you can get over some of the screaming.

blahblah454 04-09-2006 05:36 PM

As far as thrash goes defanitly check out Kreator. I was able to check these guys out live about a month ago and they blew me away. They are real thrashy and sound kinda slayerish.

Kreator!

optik_nerve 04-09-2006 08:12 PM

I'll have to second Anthrax and fucking mad props to Kutulu for mentioning Sacred Reich.

I wasn't even thinking of them when I was reading the thread.

spectre 04-09-2006 10:28 PM

After going back and listening to The Sound of White Noise, I think Anthrax (especially that album) is perfect for what you're looking for.

ThrasheR 04-15-2006 12:38 PM

Overkill
Testament
Megadeth
Exodus
Kreator
Sodom
Destruction
Annihilator

alpha66 04-16-2006 06:18 PM

Dragonforce!!!! extreme power metal! at it's best! fucking love it .... and they don't take themselves very seriously! well worth checking out!

Zodijackyl 04-20-2006 05:07 PM

Cryptic Slaughter are very raw thrash/speed metal. Try their debut album Convicted.

Krisiun play very fast, but many people dislike the death metal vocals.

ThrasheR 04-20-2006 07:11 PM

ehhh, I don't suggest Dragonforce to this guy really.

I actually saw Krisun with Morbid Angel and Behemoth last week, it was the best show of the year, and Krisiun were effing awesome but this guy isn't looking for that kind of band at all.

Threadstarter I think you should go out and buy Overkill - The Years of Decay RIGHT NOW!!!

Oh, and from Megadeth: Killing is my business...and business is good!, Peace Sells...But Who's Buying, So Far...So Good... So What! and Rust In Peace!! \m/

CyCo PL 04-21-2006 01:22 AM

I know it's been said but Testament is awesome. When I explain how Testament sounds to people, I say "imagine how Metallica would sound right now if they didn't start sucking".

I saw Krisiun live like five or six years ago with Cryptopsy, they were awesome. I wouldn't consider them thrash metal though.
