Gimme some new rock!

Ok I'm now experiencing first hand the freshman at college phenomenon....new music is hard to get exposed to because I never listen to the radio. Sure all my friends share their music with me....but everyone has the same thing: jack johnson, ben folds, dave matthews, etc....I WANT ROCK!

So guys, give me some new rock bands to check out....they don't have to be new, just new to me....here's the sort of bands I'm looking for:

Ra
Revis
Audioslave
Disturbed
Mesh
Seether
Shinedown
Stereomud
Trapt
SOAD
Thrice
Metallica

So basically anything on the spectrum...except I don't really like overly prog music like Dream Theater and Mars Volta

Thanks! Any help appreciated!

Try Danko Jones, they just released a new CD
Sleep is the Enemy
Ok, so it's being released soon at least...
Or check out their older CD's born a lion and we sweat blood

try the mars volta. and perhaps death from above 1979.

maybe a wee bit out of your tastes... but why not try something a bit new?

recommended songs:
"son et lumiere" and "interiatic esp" - the mars volta[listen to those consequtively]
"roulette dares", "drunkenship of lanterns" - the mars volta

"romantic rights", "go home, get down", "cold war" - death from above 1979
also try the josh homme remix of "black history month"

enjoy :)

Mike Doughty's new-ish CD Haughty Melodic freaking rocks.
it takes all the good of his Soul Coughing work and puts a more mainstream, less beat/avontgard

Maybe try Clutch. They aren't exactly new, but maybe new to you :) Here's a link to their latest video.

I love the way this guy delivers the vocals. They lyrics don't really seem to make much sense, but his voice is so powerful it doesn't really matter.

Strapping Young Lad
Bleeding Through
Atreyu
Killswitch Engage
Voivod (I don't like em but you might)
and of course HATEBREED

These aren't really new but you may enjoy them.

I'm not too into this, but a few of my friends at college are. Here's a couple they play a lot and from the concert t-shirts they wear.

Foetus
Boris - (the album 'pink')
Opeth
skeleton key
sun kil moon
my bloody valentine [might be a bit too soft for you, but give them a try]
godspeed you black emperor

that's all i can remember for now.

Danko Jones - aren't they from cleveland or northeast Ohio ?! [I live there except for college]

catcha back on the flipside,
will.

He's looking for straightforward rock. He even specifically mentioned TMV as a kind of band he wasn't looking for and someone went ahead and recommended it anyway... Opeth and Godspeed are two bands that fit into the same category of stuff he's not looking for (as much as I like both bands, that's not what he wants).

Looks like there's a lot of "nu-metal" on your list there, so you might want to take a look at guccilvr's recommendations first. I'm sure you'll find most of those bands pretty suitable.

Unfortunately, my area of expertise is in the exact kind of music you're trying to avoid, so I can't offer much myself. Here's a few that you might like in addition to the bands guccilvr brought up. Some newer, some older (and some you should probably be familiar with anyway, but what the hell):

A Perfect Circle
Alice in Chains
Boy Sets Fire
Deftones
Dredg
Kyuss
Queens of the Stone Age
Rage Against the Machine
Sevendust
Smashing Pumpkins
Soundgarden
Stone Temple Pilots
Tool

I'm sure you've heard of a lot of those (if not, move out of that cave), but they're all worth your time to check out. Everything on that list is pretty much straight up hard rock, with the exceptions of Tool and Dredg, who are both a little on the artsy side.

i think the onion has spoken to this topic

oh, and i really like autolux. i will keep recommending them until someone actually listens to them, heh heh. they are more in the slowdive vein of rock, so perhaps not exactly to your specs. but they have some nice grooves and pleasant feedback jams.

how about !!! or japanther...they are also cool. noisier dance-punk.

SAUT has a great list up there. I'm sure you've heard most of those bands but out of the ones saut listed, I like Deftones and TOOL the best. I'm trying to think of some other bands you might like so give us some feedback on our recommendations and we can go from there.

http://www.pandora.com/ is a pretty decent way to hear and discover new music. i'd definitly check that out.

Wyodiver33 03-23-2006 05:25 PM

saut beat me to Pandora. Definitely check the site out.

Alright thanks for the great input guys! So here's where I stand so far...

Out of the bands mentioned:

Bands I've heard of / listened to and liked:

Rage Against the Machine
Sevendust
Smashing Pumpkins
Soundgarden
Stone Temple Pilots
Tool
Alice in Chains
Deftones

Bands I've heard of and don't particularly like:

A perfect circle
Opeth (though I've heard their new album is stellar, should check it out)
Queens of the Stone Age
Mars Volta

Everything else I'm going to check out/ have started checking out

Again, thanks for such interest!!

I second the Danko Jones suggestion. If I was going to film Roadhouse 2 with Patrick Swayze showing Vin Diesel the ropes, I would cast Danko Jones as the house band.
