David Gilmour - "On an Island"
Just got it, listening thru a second time. Not at all what I expected. It's very laid back....nothing on par with "What Have You Done For Me" from Division Bell energy-wise. Great guitar playing (of course), but overall, not very Floyd sounding at all. I'll reserve judgment until i'm more familiar with it. Anyone else have an opinion?

just came out today.
The first track is a cool soundscape of all the other tracks, ending with probably the best guitar work on the album. I also like "Smile" (as seen on the live DVD a few years back), plus the two final tracks. Overall it's a whole new sound from Gilmour. It's quiet, understated, not a lot of dynamics. Nothing as epic as "High Hopes" or as memorable as "On the Turning Away" (to use recent examples of Waters-less Gilmour tracks)

The cuts I've heard have been good IMHO...I have no idea which ones they were because of the lack of info. at the time, but yeah, I hope to purchase the cd soon.
His rifs are still excellant, even when he's Water-less.

i just wish some of the tracks rocked a little more. There are sections that are pushing dangerously close to lite jazz/elevator music

I've always been a fan of when David uses simplicity. I will purchase this album as soon as I see if for sale haha. I don't care what it sounds like I'm buying it simply because I'm a collector. I can't wait to hear it though. It came out yesterday so I will be looking for it when I get off work today

Waiting for my copy to come from Amazon.
The reviews there mention that it's a return to the laid back style of the 1978 "David Gilmour" album - and if it is, great. I always found "I Can't Breathe Anymore" to be one of his best songs.

I would say that every song is at the same tempo as "Wearing the Inside Out" from Division Bell. As I said before, I think the last 3 songs on the disc are the best, but I'm curious to see what you guys think once you get it.

I'll let you know. I like his 1978 album. My favourite song on that album though is Far Away.

I've had it for a couple of days, and I'd give it 4stars.
It's not the best thing I've ever heard, but I like it a lot.

Sirius has been playing Pink Floyd all week as well as the tracks from the Gilmour cd. I've heard a fair bit of it, and it isn't too bad. In fact it is actually pretty good. I've found all of it I've heard thus far to be very relaxing and enjoyable.

I disagree with the "not very Floyd sounding" statement. Smile reminds me of the Meddle album, San Tropez in particular. So far I like it. I am going to see Gilmour at Radio City Music Hall in NYC April 5th. I hear Rick Wright and Nick Mason are touring with him. I didn't google it to see if it is true though.

After repeated listenings, i've come to the conclusion that "Where We Start" is one of the finest tunes penned by Gilmour (certainly better than any previous solo work)

The song that mostly reminded me of Floyd was "This Heaven"
i always describe this album as one that makes you want to sit on the beach, sipping some wine, smoking a cigar and watching the world pass by and end. ^_^ great album, i thought.

Had it for a week now. Hard not to hear Floyd when he sings and plays his guitar. But its a softer, mellower Floyd. A very good piece of work by David. As good as it is, I think I've yet to realize its potential. Think it will continue to grow on me.

that's right about his guitar...he just has that sound when he plays
good album, though. reminds me of a soundtrack. i'm glad he went in a new direction stylistically. did any of ol' roger's solo stuff ever sound very good? i was always ambivalent about the stuff i heard. |
