Need help from my Jazz lovin' TFP'rs!
Alright so this morning for no particular reason the great Joe Williams track Everday I Have the Blues pops into my head. Here's the kicker though I remember hearing a version that's a female vocalist, backed by a big band with the signature pluggered trumpet soloist.
I just can't remember who the vocalist is. I want to say it's still the Basie Orchestra but maybe Fitzgerald singing? It's just been so long I don't remember any more particulars I tried googling a bit to try and find this recording now since i'm stumped Any help is appriciated as it's going to drive me crazy until I figure it out! |

Count Basie was the orchestra he played with...

Ella and Joe recorded together on a couple of occasions. He was on Ella's One O'clock Jump album, and she was on his Verve retrospective. I don't know if she sang on "Every Day...", but there are two versions on the Verve box set, none on 1 O'Clock Jump. They both performed with Basie.

I just did a search on allmusic.com under Ella and it looks like she never recorded it. I also found the track listings for the two albums her and Basie did together ("One O'Clock Jump", and "Ella and Basie!"), neither of which had the song.
Odds are it's not Ella. It's even possible it's not the Basie band. I'll keep searching for possibilities.

I think you might be looking for Sarah Vaughn, I've heard her sing that tune before. I'm pretty sure she worked with Count's band.
Subsequently, speaking of Count Basie's band. I met Snooky Young today

Snooky just turned 87 3 weeks ago. His hearing is pretty much gone, he gave a lecture, answered questions and had someone repeat all the questions to him into his ear because, well... his hearing is pretty much gone.
Didn't stop him from playing through. He sounds great for an 87 year old man with his hearing gone. Still lots of taste, soul and power. Still is hitting high Eb's. It was really cool to get to see a real true Jazz legend... the greatest and most influencial lead trumpet in the music's history.

I'd like to meet him! Also Clark Terry. I have a few things I'd like to discuss with Mr. Terry. I have his phone number but am way to shy to call him :-)
No idea about the vocalist. Ertha Kit? D. Washington? Kate Smith? (kidding) |

I've met Clark Terry. He's very nice. I recorded a concert he did with a college jazz band in Kansas.

Yes I've seen Clark play and shook his hand however did not get any conversation with him.I think someone snapped a shot of me with Snooky because there were a lot of camera's going off. It'd be something I'd like to have as a keep sake... I mean it's Snookying F'n Young.

Welp after spending the week going through all my tapes I can't find it. I know I recorded it to .wav and put it on my computer at one time but it was lost when I formatted everything awhile back.
I knew it wasn't Sarah however being positive it was with the Basie Orchestra backing the singer I finally found it. It's on the Diane Schuur & the Basie Orchestra disc originally released on the GRP label then re-issued by Verve. Thanks for all your help guys |
