Does Killswitch Engage count as "real metal"? If so, then yes.

I like Brass. That's real metal. John Phillip Sousa. Rocking stuff. ;-)

OK, kidding. Yes. Old School. Sabbath, Maiden, Mötörhead.

Also, Megadeath (though not so much Metallica - it's an attitude thing. Metallica tries too hard.)

There are legions of metalheads that would be marching to your door with pitchforks and torches if they read your assessment of "true metal." I've found that most metal with only clean singing is pretty lacking in the instrumental department. Learn to cope with some extreme vocals and you'll find some really great music. I once thought the same way about the cookie monster vocals -- that it was ridiculous and had no place in music. That stigma is still there to an extent, and there's still a good deal of metal I can't listen to because the vocals are just too horrible, but don't automatically rule out a band just because they don't use traditional vocals. Opeth, early Ulver, Agalloch, and Novembre are a few of these bands that I think everyone can appreciate in some way -- and all use clean singing in addition to extreme vocals.

Jethro Tull.

(They did win the first metal grammy, and beat out Metallica to do it, embarrassing everyone involved.)

I once tried to eat some silver coins.... they had a very nasty taste... maybe if I had boiled them in water and added some salt and pepper ......

And as the KINKS are considered the gandfathers of heavy metal, how can I not like it? It all stems from Dave's rocking solo in "You Really Got Me". Or so many rock scholars say.... personally, as much as I love the KINKS, Chuck Berry's guitar was the beginning of true metal.

My mp3 player has Pantera, Metallica, Megadeth, Motorhead, Black Sabbath, Anthrax, Black Label Society, Slipknot, Machine Head, Tool, Ozzy, White/Rob Zombie and Damageplan. I'm not a big fan of what Dave Mustaine called, "cookie monster" vocals, but they work well when not overused.

I love metal, but I hate the 'true metal' label that gets passed around. It reeks of conformity and snobbery, something I've always felt is anti-metal. I put my favorite bands into groups:

Classic thrash:
Metallica (yes, all Metallica)
Megadeth
Slayer

90's metal:
Pantera
Sepultura
Machine Head

Death/Grindcore:
Napalm Death
Carcass
Death

Industrial Metal:
Ministry
Fear Factory
Static X (even though they are a little pussyish)

Melodic Death Metal:
Sentenced
In Flames
The Black League

Stoner Metal:
Down
COC
Clutch

Alternative Metal
Faith No More (and anything else Patton)
Tool
Deftones
SOAD

Punk/Metal Crossover
DRI
SOD

That covers the bulk of what I listen to. You can get about 100 albums from those bands. IMO, each one is a must have. Metal is a truly diverse form of music that is ever-changing and constantly re-inventing itself. Other forms of music like rap, mainstream rock, pop, etc. change but you'll never hear the vast diversity that you get from metal (even from the same bands, ie Metallica, Sentenced, Carcass all started at one point and ended up in a completely different place than where they started). At least 75% of the most talented guitarists, bassists, and drummers play in metal bands. Few get noticed by the press. I'm so sick of metal not getting credit yet I don't want the mainstream to ruin what is so perfect.

Let's not forget that a possibly apocryphal story of the beginning of the term "Heavy Metal" came from one reporter's review of a Jimi Hendrix concert. He described Jimi's playing as "heavy metal falling from the sky."

Now I have to agree with a lot of the people here that don't like the "cookie monster" stuff. Those bands are not better musicians simply because they play faster, don't have a singer, and nobody's heard of them. I bet few if any could match Slayer for speed, or Zeppelin or Sabbath for songwriting and I've listened to quite a bit of it of that stuff since a local college radio station plays nothing but metal of all types.

How could a metal thread not mention Manowar? That's a band that needs to be mentioned for true metal, as well as Judas Priest.

"True Metal" refers to a state of mind. It refers to Arena Shows with pyrotechnics and overblown guitar riffs and cheesy lyrics possibly with satanic themes. It refers to bands made up of guys with big hair and bigger egos. When talking about metal, there's True Metal and then there's everything else.

Heck we could even say that it all began with Bach or Wager. A lot of metal is very similar to both composers, actually.

Care to back that up with any kind of reasoning? The TFP usually frowns upon trolling.

Care to elaborate? I think the reason I like Opeth's vocal variance is because it makes the music so much more dynamic. I think a song like The Drapery Falls showcases this pretty well. That song would not be nearly as good without the seamless transition from death to clean vocals at the end. I think it enhances the power of the clean singing, actually.

You gotta give it a chance. I didn't like it either till I heard Napalm Death. Extreme music at its best. Faster than Slayer and just about the heaviest thing you've ever heard. Songwriting is subjective.

oh noes! the Opeth police are out.

First of all, I don't need to be reminded of the rules here. I know them through and through. Secondly, I don't need to argue my opinion about a band. Some people are fanatical about Linkin Park, yet most people in here would automatically blast Linkin Park for no reason. I've listed to Opeth over and over and thought they sucked. It's pretty much that simple. I found them to be boring with a touch of "I wish I was metal so I'm gonna try really hard". If you like Opeth fine, buy their CD's and make sure they have plenty of booze on the bus, just don't sit there and call me a troll because I stated an opinion.

It's no different than people saying that Opeth will change your mind about metal and yada yada yada. The two people on here that have the best knowledge of metal (this is pure opinion here..don't twist it) didn't even list Opeth in their lists. Do they like Opeth.. maybe. Do I care.. not really.

I didn't list Opeth because I've never listened to them. I'm always in search of new good music and I like it when I start listening to an existing band with a long history because I'll have several new albums to digest. Some day I'll get around to listening to them.

Expanding on calling songwriting talent a subjective item:

What defines good songwriting? Mass appeal, mood setting, ability to transition through different themes, seamless fusion of lyical content, vocal sounds, and musical tones? All those things are part of it but it's often used as an easy out for justifying talentless musicians that are somehow popular (Nirvana, Pearl Jam?). Additionally, there are different standards for every genre. Personally I think Led Zepplin sucks hairy donkey balls and is the most overrated rock band ever but if you listen to albums like Ride the Lightning (Metallica), Amok (Sentenced), Sound of Perseverence (Death), and NOLA (Down) you can see that there is just so much to those albums those albums rival the best ever made.

Good songwriting is completely subjective, but it's far more than just who can play the fastest or loudest. Now you're just nuts. To say Zeppelin is pure shit, but then list Ride the Lightning as a best album ever made, even James Hetfield would probably say he was just banging on a guitar. Now if you had said And Justice for all, then you might be on to something.

Everybody is a music snob at heart who thinks the established bands suck whereas their band that no one's ever heard of is the greatest ever, but few have tried to use Ride the Lightning in that way since like 1985.

I meant to add in 'for their styles'. Perhaps "sucks hairy donkey balls" is a little extreme for LZ but I just can't stand them. Plant's voice drives me crazy.

Come on, RtL is sooo much better than AJFA. No comparison. If you said MoP, that's too close to call... Kill 'Em All was the album where they were just banging away.

When Chuck Berry first touched a guitar he invented the calculus. Did you know that the atoms in Chuck Berry's guitar have both a definite position and velocity.

Check out Wintersun. They're good.
