I guess as far as "true metal" goes, I'm not much of a fan. I've never been able to get into Priest, Maiden or bands of that sort. As far as Opeth, they're ok, but a bit too dreary for my tastes. Don't get me wrong, I dig them at times, but they're certainly not a band I could listen to all day every day.

I listen to mostly grindcore and death metal, though I like stoner, drone, quite a bit of doom, some thrash, and, on occasion, some metalcore. I'm all about "cookie monster" vocals. During the last year, however, I've found myself listening to alot of early "metal" or "hard rock", whichever you'd like to call it. Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, Cream, etc...

I've never understood the whole metal snobbery thing. If you like it, then good for you, whether I like it or not. I've come to find out that there are few who think that way anymore (were there ever many to begin with?).

While I don't think Ride the Lightning is the best metal album (or even the besr Metallica album), I do hold "For Whom the Bell Tolls" as the penultimate (sp?) metal song

ZeRoGRaViTY 02-16-2006 01:47 PM

Favorite metal?...Probably Scars of life, static-X (wish someone would elabortate on how they are considered pussy rock), Omniblank, Fear factory, Children of Bodom, Sevendust, ,Definitly Killswitch Engage.

I dig the deep brutal voice. (I'd take a cookie monster voice over a girly bert and ernie voice anyday) :)

That's the right spelling all right, but leads to the question, if "For Whom the Bell Tolls" was the second to last metal song, what was the very last metal song?

I think you meant just plain "ultimate", with which I would be hard pressed to disagree or even come up with all that many contenders - though, now that I think of it, "Master of Puppets" and "War Pigs" spring right to mind.

Derwood 02-17-2006 05:28 AM

okay, you got me on the deinition. I meant to say "the ultimate example of everything i like about metal"

Tophat665 02-17-2006 05:26 PM

And I am right there with you. It's what metal is meant to be.

i like tool, but i don't know if i really consider them "metal."
i also really like this

muckluck 02-18-2006 10:35 AM

I like Zeppelin, and I consider that real metal. I also like Messugah and Children of Bodom which is probably more true to the modern definition of metal. It's a lot better then the "terminal throat cancer" metal. The whole extreme vocals of Opeth also keep me away from them.

maybe im one of few, but i like my rock to be able to chill out to while sitting in a room and "lighten" my mood when im doing stuff ala work. Screaming stuff just doesnt do it for me, i just get annoyed.
that said there are few screaming acts that incorperate it into the songs. Isis being one of a very small bunch that i can stand.
It could just be me being an ex stoner or just liking blues and psychadelia, but i dig the stoner rock genre over everything.
with guys like Monster magnet, black nasa, atomic bitchwax, nebula, (clutch on rare occasions), Kyuss, and im going to include Alice in chains on this list as well.
Actually forget everything i just said above, i think im addicted to fuzzed out guitars, extended space jams and high energy rockouts with blues undertones.
By the way, Lemmy is god, Page is king and Jimi cant be touched... or something

Johnny Pyro 02-19-2006 12:35 PM

Judas Priest
Iron Madien
Slayer
Megadeth
Metallica(Old, before the black album!)
Anthrax

That's real metal to me.

Good thread. I've just started getting into music more lately. Ill check out more of these bands (Im sure I've heard some of their songs and liked them before, but I never used to pay attention to names of the stuff I liked, nor go into more detail of their songs).

Turns out I do like metal. Thanks for recommending early man, I really like Death is the Answer.

Just like a fetal human comes before a grown man, early metal came before the metal of today, but is a fetal human more what a human is than a grown man? I think modern metal is closer to the idea of metal than the older stuff is, but then that's just me.

I'm the one who said they are a bit pussyish. Don't get me wrong, I have all of their albums and although I haven't listened to the new one yet, I like it all. I guess they are just a little too major label.

I think major label is a good way to describe it. I enjoy going to their shows and I enjoy their music, but they just aren't in the same badass realm as say Slayer.

No, it's not that at all. They are a good band, their sound is just very 'metal' made into pop. Maybe it's all from the band but since their first release, everything has gotten progressively softer and popiier.

While some of you choose to debate the relative term of 'real' and 'good', I will count myself as a Metal fan of several of the bands listed that covers from Black Death to Prog. Yes, Opeth is one of them. The only group whose entire catalog of CDs I own.

sunkssd 02-26-2006 07:29 PM

I love metal. Some of the bands I listen to are In Flames, Devil Driver, Slayer, Fear Factory, Soilwork, Shadows Fall, Opeth, Lamb of God, Slipknot, Static X, Kittie, Sepultura, Soulfly, Damage Plan, Meshuggah, Hatebreed, Cannibal Corpse, Dream Theater, Trivium, As I lay Dying, Kataklysm, Killswitch Engage, just to name a few. My favorite band of all time is Pantera.
