transfer case blew up!!!!!!!

so my transfer case is kinda fucked right now and i'd like to see if any of you guys might have an idea as to what the fuck happened.

'87 F 150 4x4....the truck still is mobile....forwards,backwards....but as i speed up to like 20 km's this god awful noise comes from my back portion of the transfer case.

there is definatly something loose in there.

when it's in park the front drive shaft is free and spins cleanly.......i can hear the fluids sloshing around.....seems good.

now when i put it into nuetral....the back drive shaft will not turn freely,and i can hear gears or whatever inside the case just making a nasty sound.


question is,would i be better off to just re and re it with a new unit or a rebuilt one....or....should i attempt to pull the back cover and just change the parts inside.

my hanes manual tells me i'm better off puttin' a whole new unit in it but......what do you guys think?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Am I allowed to post in Tilted Motors with the reply "Man, that is waaaay over my head"

I don't touch transmissions or transfer cases... too many gears, and I am not smart enough to decipher those "Exploded view" pictures of those things.

I just cry as I take the truck to the transmission guy and get screwed on the parts and labour.

What were you doing just before the case blew? Were you in reverse? Were the front tires stuck? Sometimes that will tell you just what gears got the worst of the damage.

IMHO, go to a transmission place, and ask for a new unit. Those refab ones just don't have it. I got a refab transmission years back, and it only lasted 2 years. The NEW transmission after that is still going!

When the transfer case on my 1988 Jeep Cherokee finally died, my brother (the mechanic) had me pick up a used one at the scrap yard. He installed it for me.

I believe the word he used was "pooched" when describing my transfer case. He said it is a common occurance in older 4x4s.

Don't know if that's a BW or NV case. What modes do you have on the 4x4 shifter?

Could be a bad rear-output bearing. You may have thrown the chain. Any leaks?

As for cracking it open yourself, no rocket science involved, but transfer cases are a wonderland of snap-rings and seals. Plan on a day+ the first time you fix one. You could open it up and find you need $200 in parts plus time to flush it out and hope nothing else got munched.

Call yards in your area. Some of these cases are plentiful and cheap. If you buy new or rebuilt plan on $600-1200 for stock strength. Instead of rebuilding I've picked up low-mileage yard units for $100. At that price it isn't worth the time to buy a kit and install it for a daily driver.

it's on a towtruck and on it's way here in an hour or so........i'm gonna open the case and have a peek.........
