Thinking about making my own TDI
Around my area VW TDI's are spendy, I found some local prices on transmissions and engines. And if I find a cheap donor body I should be able to make a car with aroudn 70k on it for about $6k, one of my vw tech friends will help me, what do you think?
|
What are you using for a donor body? Also how much for the engine, trans and miscellaneous items needed to get it up and running. $6k seems like a stretch, I just bought a high mileage used TDI engine at work for a customer and it was $3600, without the trans or any wiring, pumps, or stuff.

The 1.9 TDI's can put out 250hp and 400 ft.lbs.
Of course, I have no idea how long it would last making that kind of power. I'd rather, build a super-light gocart, and see how much gas milage I could get. ...probably as high as 90mpg. |
Wow how many cars are you going to own?
Oh ya and sounds like a good idea  |

^^good link
yeah, dont forget the ECU and the fancy fuel system too... it probably wont be as cheap as you'd hoped |
Well I talked to my buddy that is a vw mechanic and he said there is only 3 things I would need.
1. Engine 2. Transmission or just the 5th gear from a tdi transmission 3. Wiring harness He said its an easy swap, I found an engine about an hour away for $1600 and a transmission in chicago for about $800, i'm yet to locate a wiring harness. If I get a jetta or a golf with the 2.0 and stick my friend will take both and do the swap for free. |
Does the engine come with all the appropriate electronics, especially including the electronic turbo stuff?
If so, you'd think he'd have a wiring harness. |
