Awesome. My cousin and I contemplated doing the race this year in one of his Mustangs, but got busy with "real life" stuff. *sigh* Maybe next year.

You do know that the entrance fee is £8,000,000 right?

04-19-2003 12:37 AM

I doubt anybody knows the answer to this question, but I'll give it a shot. Does anybody know what road they'll be taking to miami through florida? I live really close to I-75 and would love to get some shots of them flying down the road and if they're coming down 75 and cutting across alligator alley I have a much better chance of seeing than if they went down I-95. If anybody can find out before Monday that would be awesome.

0001 04-19-2003 12:39 AM

No one knows except the event planners. The gumballers themselves aren't told where to go until the day of the stage. Unless someone wants to leak us some info... ? :)

shakran 04-19-2003 04:29 AM

04-19-2003 06:53 AM

Someone said, "They got 28 tickets in six days" Thats the way to go down :D

johnnysmokes 04-19-2003 12:38 PM

mighty mouse 04-19-2003 01:03 PM

Damn cell phones! Damn them all to hell!!!!!

0001 04-19-2003 01:25 PM

?

mighty mouse 04-19-2003 02:08 PM

Where do you think all the calls came from? The people on the road who where scared by the cars flying by. In the old days you would have had to stop and get to a phone, at least giving the racers some time to get away. Now you just reach for your cell phone and dial.

DEI37 04-19-2003 04:09 PM

This kind of stuff is just too much fun. I'd love to get in on something like that once my project is complete, but for $12,000, I could do TWO of my project cars!

RaDiAn 04-19-2003 04:17 PM

cool

Jeff 04-19-2003 05:18 PM

After the race started, hundreds of 911 calls came flooding in with people complaining about reckless drivers. I think they should just keep it in Europe, they seem to have better luck over there.

a1t3r3g0 04-19-2003 05:47 PM

I'm not aware of some of the sub-rules of the race, but are they not allowed to put bras on their cars? I've seen the DVD of one of the races and the front ends of the cars get eaten up from driving for so long. Sure they won't have problems paying for a repaint, but why bother with the hassel? ya know?

MSD 04-19-2003 08:33 PM

They're going I-80. If they take the route through Chicago, it's I-80 to Oakland, then I-215 thorugh Denver back to I-80, then to I-88 all the way to Chicago. From there, it's a mess of Interstates down to Fla.

In Fla, it's going to be I-75 to I-10E in Jacksonville, I-295 in St. Augustine, then I-95 down to Miami.

I fthey skip Chicago (probably not) then it's I-10 and 12 all the way to Fla, with a bit of back road between San Antonio and Houston. In that case, the Fla route will be 75 from St Louis to West Palm Beach, then 95 the rest of the way to Miami.

These are not definite routes. These are estimates based on statements by race planners and preliminary info given by racers.

Get us some pics, please.

Link up above is all I've got so far, sorry...

Grondar 04-19-2003 09:10 PM

Great info, and thanks for the pics.

Those cars are so sexy! I bet that is a hell of a lot of fun for all involved.

Atomic Pinkie 04-20-2003 02:52 AM

lol my dad did something like this back in the day...first one to get to the tip of Wisconsin from Ill.

Was pretty funny, they have videos of the whole thing.

Cops nabbed them after they escorted their helicopter away... (they were using a helicopter to spot the speed traps)

The only car to finish the race was a mercedes station wagon...it didn't look like a sporty car.

They ended up getting a picture taken with the sheriffs dept. charges were dropped.

Frowning Budah 04-20-2003 07:09 AM

GREAT shots! I thought they were suppose to be going through New Orleans.

Ambition 04-20-2003 03:53 PM

WOO HOO tuesday the 22nd they'll reach my town Miami, If I find out where, or if anyone knows any info about where they'll be or headed. I will take some pics and post them.

SilverFox 04-20-2003 06:46 PM

They need to organise a Gumball across Canada. Or at least through Waterloo...

0001 04-20-2003 07:45 PM

Who wants to drive a $100 000USD+ car through Ontario?

BooRadley 04-22-2003 04:36 PM

Who wants to drive a $100,000 + USD car on public roads anywhere?

wondash 04-24-2003 09:24 AM

Good article.

Quote:

Drivers in the race - known as the Gumball Rally - said at least one participant had accumulated $10,000 in fines and bail postings before reaching New Orleans. Another entrant had been cited for going nearly four times the speed limit - 210 m.p.h. - in his 655-horsepower Koenigsegg in Texas, said racer Brian Kelley of Chicago.
Quote:

Bo Bridges, 28, a photographer from Hermosa Beach, Calif., was driving the slowest vehicle in the field, a Volkswagen Eurovan sponsored by the beverage company Yoo-hoo. He described the race as a 3,000-mile high-speed party.

....

Between San Francisco and Pensacola, Fla., Bridges was pulled over four times and received one ticket for going "about 120" m.p.h. in the Nevada desert. He said the van had a tendency to shake violently at speeds over 90.
Quote:

Kelley, the Chicagoan driving the Audi, said two women were pulled over in Texas for speeding in a Ferrari 575 Maranello. When state troopers approached the car, they found the women were topless.

The officers, according to Kelley's account, then called for backup - and posed for photos with the competitors before allowing them to leave.
Those were the highlights of the article for me.

Dangerous, absolutely. Yet I still find it very interesting and exciting. It would certainly be one of those experiences you remember for the rest of your life.

The whole thing sounds incredibly exciting and just fun to be around, even though it is dangerous.

Hopefully no one lost their lives as a result of the racing.

That was a very well written article, thanks for sharing it.

Recoil 04-24-2003 08:24 PM

wow exciting indeed :)

SweetVroom 04-25-2003 12:48 PM

if anyone was there in houston at greenway plaza, i was there hanging around with most of the ferrari guys, they are REAL nice people!

I did ask about the front of the car but not specificlly about the bra's and they said it does't really matter, i'm also thinking the same thing, because couldn't you just clay the car afterwards?

if they stuck to europe then how would us american's have fun? :D the reason most of the drivers are europeon is so that all they have to do is pay the fine, i don't think their insurance is affected as much!

Gumball and the Players Run were sweet!

pta200 04-25-2003 01:09 PM

My friend drove the blue M5 with the polizei sticker on it. Said he had a blast!!!
