My Homemade Sub Setup

Here are a few pics of before, during and after. This is in a 2000 Celica. I traded the two 12" subs in for 1 12" and I think it sounds even better. The two that were in there before were crap.

Total this took me about 4 hours to build. There is room behind the amp and I mounted the 12 disc changer there, to access it you just have to drop the back seat. Since I dont really change the discs much this isnt a problem. I sealed all seams with silicone to prevent air leaks. All of the wood is 3/4 MDF and the carpet is just some fabric i picked up for $2/yard. the back of the box isn't carpeted but no one will ever see it anyway.

working now?

Looks good and I applaud you for bucking current trends and opting for a sealed box. When it comes to sound, I'm a strong believer in quality over quantity.

This is what I keep trying to tell people. It's better to build your own setup, you'll probably save a couple bucks and you'll get exactly what you want.

I like. It looks clean (as opposed to many new set-ups) and will allow you to get a better sound quality than just the sub on the floor. How far does the back of the sub enter into the car?

Mephisto2 06-23-2005 02:26 PM

For the life of me, I can't understand why you'd want to do that.

But that's just me.

I'm impressed at how well it looks. Very professional. I'm sure it would have cost you a great deal more to get it done by a shop. Is that a felt covering on the box? How have you secured it so as to avoid rattle?

Nice job.

Nicely done. Homemade brings such a higher sense of pride (my system is all homemade and installed).

The base of the box is about 10 inches wide while the top is about 4. It follows the slant of the back seats. Total airspace is about 1.25 cu.ft. Perfect for one sub.

I wouldnt call it a felt, more like a heavy black fabric for making clothes. Looks good and feels good too :) The floor of my car had a reinforcement that is about 3x3 across the car so i built the box to go up and over it. It locks it right into place without using any bolts. I tested it on some pretty tight corners and there is zero movement, theres really no where for it to go.

Thanks, I totally agree, I love looking at something and knowing I made it with my own two hands.

Ishmal 06-29-2005 11:31 PM

,,,, you could always try bolting it down to the car. i am talking about drilling and securing..

this will save your sub atleast once if they try to rp you off
