My Porche 924
 

I bought my first car. I have been looking for an mid 60's early 70's muscle car (something like a dodge dart) and yesterday I called about a 1978 Porche 924 for only 2,900. They are usally around 6-7000 I find, Im spectacle but its only a few blocks from me and I take a look and discover a gem. Its almost rust free completely, even in the wheel wells. New Tires, New timing belt, battery. The engine is starting fine from cold (I do have a hot start problem but its supposbly common with the car and can be fixed with some work) The wiring looks good, belts are good, exhaust will need replacing in a year or two. It is a 4 speed manual and the engine is clean running. The only problem I have is that the brakes are spungy. I didn't even notice but my dad drove it and came to that conclusion so instead of me dicking around I took it to a garage this morning for a quick look. Its completely stock and if it was my second vehicle it would apply for collectors plates. Me, being 6'8" and 210pounds found that I had to remove the drivers side door hadle/compartment in the interior to allow enough room for my knees to adaquetly fit between the door and the steering wheel. Its running great though and I don't forsee needing to do much engine work (knock on wood). The questions I had though, the car was brough up from Denver to the west coast of Canada. The penzoil sticker on the door interior claims the oiltyp they used is 5w50. that seems a little weak to me as porche mechanics recommend 15-20w50. Im guessing the 5w50 was used for low tempeture and higher alltitude driving but now its warm and sea level. I guess I should change my oil over to 15w50 as is recommened? I belive doing so would also increase oil pressure. Im going to take some pictures tonight and post them on the board

924 ... nice but I'd have to get a 944 S4

My dad has a 928, good cars, glad you got the manual, the only way to go. Hope everything works out for you.

928 and 924 are VERY different.

The 70s 924s are 4 cylinder Audi engines, very reliable, and are good cars for every day work.

The 928s are V8, 4.5 liter and upwards, and kick arse in a big way. They need serious TLC to keep running properly.

The good thing about the 924/928/944 is the 4 seater thing - could almost convince my wife that they're family cars!

4 seaters! HA! my 924 has a joke in the back, not a seat. I managed to fit there freind above 6'3" with paul sitting in the back, 1 leg out the window and the other resting on the pasengers shoulder. Its a fun little car but definatly not the performce of a 928 (maybe in a couple years I can afford one) I have found only 19 little quibles going over the entire car (these 19 will restore it to near perfect condition) stuff like repainting door handles, window metal, repairing wind hatch hinges, seat belt light being always on.

Ahh, you're making me want to finish my Porsche.

I have collection of project cars and one of them is a 1969 911T that I paid $4500 dollars for. I had a new floor and rocker panels installed for another $4500 and ran out of money and steam. I removed the engine and tranny for a rebuild but haven't got back to them yet.

She sits in my shop under cover just waiting. Good luck with yours. Maybe I will get energized from the rest of you.

I did a road trip with my dad and one of his friends when I was younger, you just have to know how to maneuver!

I did say "almost ....". The back seats will be fine for babies (ie. a young family).

I've got a 928. Best damn car I've ever driven. True they need TLC to keep up to snuff, but turning your own wrench instead of paying a mechanic keeps costs down. Typically mechanics charge $95 per hour.
