Cars with good HP to Gas mileage
Which cars have a good horsepower to gas mileage rate, as in they get good horsepower but still retain the gas mileage. I think these are the most important characteristics to a car.
Why do you think these are the most important characteristics to a car lol?
Who wants a completely underpowered car that drives like a bus, which does 5mpg?
Corvettes get about 25 mpg. That's probably the best speed to fuel economy ratio.
I get about 18.5 City and 24-26 Highway in my 04 745i Sport. It's a big car, with pretty good power.
What woudl a 1998 Lexus GS400 get?
That is a V8 with 400HP! |
www.fueleconomy.gov <--- greatest website evar for this type of topic.
The Corvette would probably win this hands down. Makes 400HP, and CAN top 30mpg on the highway.
I swear weight, suspension, and other aspects of a vehicle dont define it.
What's the new Accord Hybrid, like 250 horse and 37 MPG hwy.? That's not bad.
the Toyota Celica is really the only one i can think of off the top of my head. it gets somewhere in the mid to high 20's in mpg and has decent HP. i wasn't aware that the corvette got 25 mpg. i thought it was in the teens. i need to research my cars more.

The 4g63t is one of the best engines ever made. This car makes over 275 horsepower, and gets an average of 21 miles to the gallon. Thats reasonable I think. Other than that...eh, rating MPG on a car with a lot of horsepower is bullshit. You're going to drive it WOT a lot, so, gas mileage ratings dont mean shit when you have it floored. |
I just drove my NSX to Maine and back and this is how I did.
http://techquarium.com/gallery2/main...leagechart.jpg Admittedly, I don't have the horsepower of a Corvette but I don't think that's bad at all. |
Not bad on the NSX at all. Right at 30MPG on a couple tanks, too. I'd take that!
not to mention how much better the NSX looks
eagle talon/ eclipse gsx. turbo 4 cylinder with awd. Makes 205 hp stock and can get close to 28 mpg if u drive it nice. Althought they are fun to modify and drive with a lead foot, so most dont get that kinda mileage.
My 90 Trans Am has the 5.7L V8, and will get 26 on the highway, it has roughly 300hp.
my friend had a late 80's trans am and it only got 4 mpg....but then again it also didnt have a revearse gear, tach, door panels or anything else raelly.
I haven't really paid that close attention to what my car gets around town - I was keeping track on the trip because it was business and I need the data for my expense report.
Anyway, when I fill up again I'll calc it and post back. I'm guessing my normal 50/50% city/highway tankful will be in the low 20's. The guys at nsxprime.com say they get less than 10 when they are at the track. To be expected I suppose when you spend most of a day hovering around 8000 RPM. |
That's sort of a bad way to judge cars - I mean, a Toyota Prius gets something like 70 mpg and makes 70 hp, I think. That's a decent ratio in comparison to most of the compact market and beats the hell out of my car, but it still doesn't mean I want a Prius.
they make turbo kits for the motor part of the prius now....pretty cool. Some company in japan made like 170 hp on the motor part, and then had the electric motors to boot.

Actually... The first gens got 195 horsepower (89-94) 1st gens w/ an automatic trany (smaller turbo and injectors) got 185 horsepower 2nd gens got 205. (95-99) 1st gens are still far better because they have the 14b turbo, no crankwalk, and a better style. Also have the "sleeper" look going for them. Oh yeah, 4 bolt rear end = nice too.... |

My neighbor just bought a new Prius and he's thrilled with the way it handles and his gas mileage, 50 miles per gallon. It's not a bad looking car. His daughter has a Toyota Matrix, which is pretty cute... but I haven't heard about her gas mileage (yet). I'm starting to shop more seriously and these are two cars I'll test drive, at least. The technology is improving fast! Now for the body designs to look better! That'll happen, it just takes time and interest from us consumers. |
Lotus Elise wins the speed to mileage ratio race handily. It only has 190 horsepower, but it also weighs under a ton, so the gas mileage is almost 30. but 4.7s 0-60? Screw hp if you're making those kinds of numbers
arent the vette zo6's doin low 4's? Along with cars like E55 AMG's? I would think an elise would burn those times.

i've got a 99 cougar with 105,000 miles on it.
automatic v6 with 170 hp. i get about 24 in the city and 36 on the highway. |
The 2000 911 Turbo makes 415 hp and gets 22 mpg. Not bad.
