2005 Mustang: how do I fill my gas tank?!

I just bought a 2005 Mustang yesterday and... yeah, I can't fill the gas tank.

The nozzles just click as if the tank is completely full (it's about half). At first I thought it was the nozzles at the one gas station (I tried 2 diff pumps), but then I went to a completely different gas station and had the same thing happen.

Uh, haha.. yeah, what's up with this? I mean, as far as I know there's nothing special you need to do to fill it...

(ahah and yes, i feel dumb asking how to refill my gas tank)

Isn't this something to ask the dealer? I think you just wanted to let us know that you got a nice shiny new Mustang.

Stompy 04-15-2005 06:54 PM

Uh, no. Dealer is closed.. it's 11 PM.

Don't push the nozzle in so far.

After I Googled for a second it is a problem with the car. Call the dealer, it seems the tank and filler neck may need to be replaced. Good job Ford. http://www.boomspeed.com/sixate/icon_rolleyes.gif

That's about the best I can think of too PT, on my parents old Buick they used to have the same thing would happen and they just had to move the nozzle out a bit, other than that I have no clue.

How do you like the new Mustang by the way? Great looking car all the reviews seem great, congrats and enjoy.

Yeah, I talked to a friend's dad who worked on the tanks for them and he said they're designed kinda screwy.

Until then, the solution is (as someone stated) to hold the nozzle out quite a bit so that it's barely in the tank, and fill that way.

It had me baffled because 1. I'm not at all a car person and 2. sometimes common sense eludes me. Never thought "let's take it out almost all the way and see if that works!" So thanks for the quick responses :)

He also said there's an issue where, if you let it get to the last quarter of the tank, it could take 20-30 minutes to refill because the rear axle goes through the center of the tank.. so you fill up one side and it kinda has to spill over to the other. But yeah, he was saying that because of this, and the nozzle issue, that there very well may be a recall sometime soon.

That sucks man, hope ford fixes it for you, just had to deconstruct the rear end of a 91 T/A to drop the tank

beejay 05-05-2005 08:15 PM

I haven't had a problem with mine... Sometimes you have to pull the pump out slightly and angle the handle down to get it to take.

What's the deal with Ford and gas tanks? First they leave the tank so exposed that cars blow up at the drop of a hat (Pinto, Crown Vic, et. al.), now they over-engineer it so badly the bloody thing doesn't work. You'd think they'd have figured it out after 120 years.

Ford has always been weird like that...they design the vehicle and then make the tank to fit it. Just like the have been with their oil pans for vehicles, make the vehicle and make the oil pan fit vehicle, thats why fox body mustangs have the goofy double humped, double drain plug oil pans

There is a service bulletin out for this problem. You'll have to go to your dealer and ask them to install this new tank.

Some 2005 Mustang vehicles may exhibit the fuel tank being slow or difficult to fill. The condition may be described as, repeated rapid shutoffs of the filling station pump nozzle, or multiple nozzle shutoffs when attempting to fill the fuel tank. The condition may be due to the fuel tank vapor venting system inside the fuel tank.
