Porsche's 4 Door... The Panamera

Porsche Panamera: Concept version of automaker's fourth model line due this fall

http://www.autoweek.com/images/news/101990

Porsche’s anticipated fourth model line has a name: Panamera. Registered by Porsche at the same time as the Cayman moniker it is applying to the upcoming Boxster-based coupe, the new name is expected to grace a concept version of the car, which insiders describe as a combination of coupe and sedan, at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

Due out in 2008, the Panamera has been conceived as successor to the 928. Designed with space for four adults, it is also tipped to come clothed in a four-door body in a move that will pitch it into direct competition with cars like the Mercedes-Benz CLS and Maserati Quattroporte.

Secrecy surrounds the mechanical basis for the new car, though the Stuttgart rumor mill suggests Porsche chairman Wendelin Wiedeking has forged links with Volkswagen on a new rear-wheel-drive platform program in a move similar to that undertaken with the Cayenne and Touareg. Volkswagen chairman Bernd Pischetsrieder is interested in adding a new rear-wheel-drive model to the Volkswagen lineup between the Passat and Phaeton, and after the recent breakdown in talks with Maserati, it seems additional cooperation with Porsche may be in the cards.

Power for the new car is set to come from the same 4.5-liter V8 engines as those offered on the Cayenne. They include a naturally aspirated version with 340 hp and a turbo_charged unit with 450 hp. An even more powerful model with more than 500 hp is also in the pipeline. Up to 20,000 examples of the Panamera are expected to roll annually from Porsche’s Leipzig factory in Germany, where it will be produced alongside the Cayenne.

If that's what the production car will really look like, I like it. It's so clean. Very beautiful, and even better with 400+ horsepower. I wonder if they'll put an awd system in it like the 911 and cayenne

desal75 03-17-2005 03:37 AM

They should have made that before the Cayenne

matthew330 03-17-2005 06:15 AM

It kinda looks like someone stepped on the cayenne. The back doors open backwards?

dirtyrascal7 03-17-2005 07:39 AM

oh my god that's ugly... it looks like something chrysler would design. this is just all kinds of wrong.

Thats why the door handles are like that!

Cynthetiq 03-17-2005 09:47 AM

all to compete with the upcoming MB 4 door luxo coupe.

Halx 03-17-2005 11:46 AM

4 door coupe? That doesn't make sense, since 'coupe' pretty much means '2' and in.. 2 doors. I'm confused.

Cynthetiq 03-17-2005 12:08 PM

me too... I saw it the other day on the mbusa.com site. the new CLS is a 4door luxo coupe

Yeah, that's the car I thought of when I saw this.
I think the Porsche looks better though. I'm cautiously optimistic about this, hoping it's more along the lines of the M5 then anything else.

Scorps 03-17-2005 02:35 PM

Is there a front shot?

Hmmm... that one above has normal rear doors, not the ones that swing "backwards," I wonder if that one at the top of the thread is a concept and the production car will have normal doors.

Willravel 03-17-2005 03:39 PM

Wow, that's beautiful. I used to race in a 928 at Laguna Seca a few years back. This will be on my wish list.

Ilow 03-17-2005 04:13 PM

I actually really like it. normally I think car companies should stick to what they do best (i.e. cayenne WTF?) but it should give MB some competition.

I think the term your looking for is "suicide doors"

Scorps 03-17-2005 09:06 PM

i guess sedans are becoming more popular because of the insane insurrance prices!

irseg 03-17-2005 09:14 PM

I don't think most people in the market for high-end Mercedes and Porsches care too much about insurance costs.

probably not....lol

Regarding the difference door handle location for the rear door handles;
The articles that I have seen so far state that there are no actual photos or drawings released by porsche, so these are composites and artists renderings.

Ahhh, ok, that makes a lot of sense. With all these image-editing software packages that are out there now, sometimes it's hard to tell if it's a real pic or just a composite.

that benz looks way out of place parked there. where in la was this?

Globber2000 03-18-2005 03:12 PM

it's a good looker, but what's the point of a 4-door? isn't that Audi or VW's job?

etla 03-18-2005 03:31 PM

Well at least they aren't making a pick up truck.

In the San Fernando Valley [where I live, and close to where Halx used to live]. This just happens to be the crummy back-area of the benz owner's shop

ems 03-18-2005 08:15 PM

btw, see that black VW GTI with the black [well, anthracite] colored rims in the background of one of the shots? well, that would be my pride and joy :)

madsenj37 03-19-2005 09:57 AM

Fugly. Enough said.

exactly. which have been around since at least the 30s... and vw was one of the first.

the car looks eerily similar, from the side profile, to the mb cls that has been shown in previous posts.

etla 03-19-2005 07:20 PM

Suicide Doors

VW were hardly one of the first to have suicide doors. This door style predates the ICE let alone VW and were not uncommon on coaches (the drawn by horse type). Chrysler at least had them on production cars in the early 30's. Heck my grand father had a '33 Dodge Sedan Delivery with suicide doors.

I kind of like the Porsche, but to me, this looks like one of those old Beetles that someone put a phony Mercedes front end on.

Gnzo 03-20-2005 01:18 PM

not sure I like the back of it. Looks like an early 80's 928. Maybe it's just the angle of this picture.

twilightfoix 03-24-2005 09:07 AM

all i have to say is that is one sexy car

jvwgtr 03-28-2005 12:48 PM

Very interesting...though it doesn't look very Porsche-y.
