BMW M6

BMW has been building the 6 series coupe since 1976, and the M6 since 1987.

The "M" in the name designates BMW Motorsport Division upgrades over the base 640, for the engine, chassis, suspension, price tag.

507 HP V-10
0-62: 4.6 sec
1/4 mile: 13.2 sec

I'll admit that it looks nice, and i'm sure it handles beautifully, but for the price tag and the specs that i'm sure it has i'm kind of disappinted in the quarter mile time.

Yeah, a BMW M Series is my dream car. For around A$150,000 you can buy an M3 in Australia.

Nice. Very nice.

Score one for Bangle. For a total of one.
The best design I've seen from BMW in quite a while, but the freaky trunk isn't so hot.

Bangle would have done a pretty good job on this one if he could've gotten over that hideous trunk design he loves so much. That, and the interior looks somewhat lacking in content while having too many bulges and weird shapes all over the place.

BMW was once about as good as it gets when it comes to understated, elegant, yet sporty designs. Now it's as if they're trying to be what Pontiac was a few years ago. Meanwhile Pontiac is now churning out cars so bland they make Toyotas look like Ferraris by comparison. Weird how things change so quickly.

Who's Bangle?

Yeah, they seemed to have stumbled upon this odd trunk design, and decided to keep it. I believe they've used it on other recent BMW's...don't like it much.

They used a very similar trunk design on the last 7-series. I'm not entirely sure I hate it, but I'm not certain I like it either. However, the rest ofr Bangle's stuff I'm quite the fan of. But let's not make this a Pro-/Anti- Bangle thread. The M6 is going to rock. For a car of it's size I really think the pre-occupation with 1/4-mile times has got to stop. what you're gonna get with this car is something that 3900 lbs (well, that's the curb weight of the M5...) and can run with the Supercars when it comes to grip, overtaking, acceleration, etc, but still fit the Golf clubs, baby carriage, and a weeks worth of luggage. Oh yeah, and you get the insane sound of the BMW V-10. I've heard it, it's like an orgasm in your ears....

Yes, to have over 500 horsepower in a street car is mindboggling. Hell, 500 horsepower in some racecars is a lot. You said it: basically a supercar without any of the restrictions of typical supercars.

Thanks. Bangle: that doesn't sound German. I like the basic design of the new BMWs, the shift towards the more 'rounded' look. I particularly like the 5-series, not so much the 7. The 7 just doesn't look right to me.

Just wanted to add a few corrections and some additions to the history of the 6 series line from Bayerische Motor Werken.

1. The 6 series was introduced in 1976, but the M635CSi was introduced in 1983. The m635CSi was the first actual M6, as it were.

2. BMW discontinued the entire 6 series line in 1989.

3. The 2004 M6 is the first 6 series from BMW in 15 years after the unpopular 8 series was discontinued.

I have always loved the lines of the 6 series and remember beautiful Maddy Hayes from 'Moonlighting' drove one as did bad ass Hawk from 'Spencer for Hire.' I fell in love with the lines of this coupe, the jutting nose, the frameless windows, and the elongated two door look.

This 2004 incarnation doesn't quite do it for me...but who knows maybe it will grow on me. I think personally that the current M5 is a better package.

right.. the 7 was the first Bangle sedan and the 5 was toned down more because many people have the same issue as you.

My friend John has a BMW M3 that we highly modified. Good stuff.

the only thing i don't like about the new interiors is the heavy use of fake wood either you make it real at that price or stick with brushed aluminum or carbon fibor or somthing else along those lines.

I really do love the new BMWs; they drive absolutely excellent, the interiors are the best designs I've ever seen....but the outside really does not cut it for me. Its gotten to the point where their designs are not even fresh or new anymore, they are just recycling past designs. Look at the rear bumper, it looks like they ripped the front bumper of my '02 M3 and glued it on teh back of this car. The trunk looks like a parts bin part from the new 5s and 7s... I mean I still support the brand (I do have 5 BMWs in my driveway ATM...) But I dont see me buying any of these new cars. I would much rather buy another 87-88 M6 than this new one.

if it does...... then it's really that the G6 back end looks like the 6 back end, since it was designed and released first.

thats not how LSD rear ends work, the amount of lockup is perportional to the amount of torque input. the perportion of lock up to torque input is called the ramp angle, which is set as part of the design. the steeper the ramp angle the less torque input is needed to fully lockup the differential, and once fully locked, no additional amount of torque input will result in any more lockup. locked is locked. Ramp angles can be sperate howver for the drive/coast sides of the ring gear, meanign you can have a seperate ramp angle for braking and acceleration. Next the differential can only transfer torque form the faster turning wheel to the slower turning one. the slower turning wheel will always be the inside wheel. so when you transfer torque to it form the outside wheel you are increasing understeer. mid corner your torque transfer is low as the turn radius is steady, so you have no need for lockup. at corner exit, where the torque input is increased, is where the LSD shines, as torque gets transfered form the inside tire to the outside tire creating oversteer. this is due form the vehicle straightening out and the smaller difference in speed between the two tires. Finally a LSD will always create understeer while braking.

so as you can see, what you are saying, A) is not possible, and B) not benefical.

He has driven several foreign cars, recently Pierce Brosnan drove a Z3 (eeeeewww....) a Z8 (slightly less ewwwww...) and a 5 series w. Remote Control (niiiice....) in his first movies. But then came the mighty Vanquish, and James was back to Aston, where we all know he really belongs. And he will, I believe, be staying there, driving either the Vanquish, DB9, or AMV8 in his next movie. So, while the M6 is a badass car, I doubt it'll make it to the silverscreen with James. I do hope they make some new movies at www.bmwfilms.com with the new M's, though...
