Auto- How much should this paint repair cost?

In a nutshell, I brushed up against the left corner or a Cadillac's bumper in a parking lot and scraped the paint in about a baseball sized area (no denting, just scrapeage). I left a note and an elderly man contacted me. He got a quote from Cadillac and said it's going to cost $850 to repair because it's the white-pearl paint and they basically need to redo a large part of the bumper (he said the whole bumper but it sounded like he was trying to remember what they told him).

Anyhow, is this about what it should cost for the type of paint and repair? I've had paint repair done and I figured it'd cost around $200-$450 to get this one done when it happened but $850 seems very steep for such a small scrape, even if the paint is top-notch.

Thanks for any advice guys.

his estimate is massive because he went to a caddy dealer. most bodyshops could probably do it for alot less, the problem is since u hit his car, he pretty much gets to choose where he wants the repairs done.

don;lt forget that often most scratches and such can require a 24" blend area all around them in order to get the color matching correctly. also the white pearl color that cadillac uses is not cheap, nor easy to blend. 850$ for a quality job does not seem that out of whack.

Better off to do it without your insurance, for something so small why raise your rates.

I agree with PT, and I'd like to add that it's kickass that you did the right thing and left him a note. Imagine how pissed you would be (and perhaps you've been there) if you came out to a scratch like that and no note. Kudos.
