Civic Type R

Anybody here own or drive a the New Civic Type R? I'm just curious. Seen it around a few places, and wondered how it actually drives?

I've drove one when I chose to buy a new car in March. I had 2 hours and to be honest i was a little disapointed. In a straight line they're quite fun but round corners, even long sweeping bends they handle like MPV's. I'll admit if this was the first car i stepped into in march to test drive, then I believe I would have been quite happy with it, because at the end of the day it's not slow... but I had already test driven the Renault Clio Tsport V6, the Focus RS, A Golf R32 and a Renault Clio 172.

You may argue that these cars except the 172 are way outside the Civic Type R's retail price and should be expected to out perform the Civic, but the 172 also blew it away which costs less than the Civic. I love the Civic's pretty unique gear stick position though heh

I meant the European Type R. Too bad you all don't get that in the States. I'm innterested to hear opinions on the engine. All the reviews I've read loved it, or hated it, because the powerband is so narrow, everything coming into play between 6k and 8k revs. I was just curious, I guess.

Rippley:

That is the problem with all VTEC engines - the VTEC does not kick in until way up the rev range.

In terms of handling - there are a few better packages out there - the Focus and the Clio just to name a few, but you may sacrifice performance (depending on the model).

Another option is to get a VTEC controller. You can pick a decent one up for under AU$1000 down here (That's about 500 euros). This greatly improves the range in which the VTEC kicks in - you will notice a huge improvement.

I dunno about you, but I'm not that keen on the new Civic, notwithstanding the fact that it is a great car - the focus is so much better looking...

The states will be getting the civic Si type R in some form (no, not the si, it's going to be the same body, different motor/tranny) possibly by the end of this year. Look for it to be around 2k-4k more than the standard Si and to kick out a couple more horses

whats sad is this

the golf r32 held up against the new WRX and the new other rally car that just came out...they both had rally tires

the golf would've have been very close to them if they had upgraded the tires

its all on vw vortex...mind you..the golf has a VERY UNDERPOWERED engine in regards to the WRX STi or whatever it si....the golf would rape with a bigger engine

bla bla bla... any proofs, except "it is because it is, it would because it would, it would IF" ? N/o to golf r32 but it's still outclassed by cars like Mitsu evo or subaru impreza wrx or sti. First - whells, your talking about some rally tires ... wtf, what kind of test it was, if subaru was on normal wheels it would still kick golf's ass. this golf is 6.5 0-100km/h and wrx is around 5.5, then wrx has SMALLER wheels in every dimention than golf (golf has 18 inches 225/40)
then Impreza has 280 bhp from ~2.0 liter turbo engine
and golf r32 has a 240bhp 3.2 v6 engine (from phateon)...
Many many other little and bigger things which make impreza still a much better car then new golf (which I like very much as well).
Just plz think before you write something like that... it's a post like "A porsche turbo is fast ??? lol, my civic could be faster if..."

The one with the Mustang Cobra engine in it that was converted to RWD

Focus SVT? Psshaw I say. Unless Ford moves the Cosworth or the RS focus here, they can keep it. Why spend $22K plus on a SVT when the SRT4 is available for under $20K?

And the Civic Type-R is on the way to the US. It will feature a K20 RSX-S motor pushing 200 horsepower. And it will still look like a minivan.

What you guys ALL miss out on is the Nissan Silvia 200SX - Front mount, RWD 2 litre turbo pushing 200 hp in Australia - Japanese model almost 300 hp - leaves WRX for dead because can easily get it up to 400 hp and are known to run well over 700 hp!! AND its a real sportscar - none of this front wheel drive/four wheel drive crap - you wanna drop the clutch, spray rubber and get some drift happening - NO PROBLEM!!! Good luck trying that in a Civic or WRX!

Nickt: AWD is a good thing. when you have less spin off the line you have faster times. Spinning your tires is just a good way to get yourself into new tires.

We don't miss out at all. It is relatively easy to buy a Silvia engine/tranny, or a whole front clip and drop the drive train into a 240 in place of the KA24 boat-anchor.

actually vtec controllers are no good on a stock engine.

tec-9-7 - of course you can get the mechanicals - but what is a 240 compared with a brand new S15 Silvia?

zfleebin - AWD has its pros and cons - RWD with LSD is lots more fun though!

OROIT - I beg to differ - VTEC controllers vary in price quality and performance - you can get APEXi controllers that are designed for stock VTEC engines in Civics and Integras which increase the rev range in which VTEC operates, so instead of kicking in at 6500rpm it comes in at 4500-5000. Then there are the full-blown controllers designed for modified engines.

VTEC comes on at about 5500 in my car so lowering it by 500rpm is hardly useful.
Apexi do make a fine product though

For the record, the Impreza STi has a 2.5 litre 4cyl turbo, pushing 300hp/300tq. It is an impressive vehicle and I would not mind owning one. Personally I prefer 2.0 litre or less with turbo but that's just me.

The R32 is a normally aspirated 6 and is more of a luxury sports car than a lean, mean, racing machine. That vortex comparison was apples to oranges. The Mitsu/Scoobie comparison was a good one, tho.

For the record a STI will not do 300/300 to the wheels, that is flywheels HP and there is a lot of contraversy over if that is even accurate with the 20% drivetrain loss.

20% drive loss? Is that normal for an AWD car?

20% is probley low, 25-30 would actually be a better guess.
