Shelby Ford SUV unveiled

Shelby Ford SUV unveiled
Carroll Shelby, best known for high-powered Shelby Mustangs, has plans for the huge Expedition.
November 10, 2004: 5:28 PM EST
By Peter Valdes-Dapena, CNN/Money saff writer

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Carroll Shelby, best known as the creator of the muscle car-era Shelby Mustangs, is adding his big-power touch to something a little different and much bigger -- a souped-up version of the Ford Expedition sport/utility vehicle.

The Shelby Expedition, which Shelby Automobiles is calling a "performance utility vehicle" or PUV, is powered by a 5.4 liter Ford GT engine fitted with a supercharger. The engine produces 550 horsepower and 500 foot-pounds of torque; the largest stock engine available on a Ford Expedition produces 301 horsepower.

The special edition also has a five-speed automatic transmission, a high-performance exhaust system and special brakes. It rides on 22-inch wheels.

The vehicle was unveiled this week at the Specialty Equipment Market Association trade show in Las Vegas.

The Shelby Expedition has a custom interior with navigation equipment, a CD/DVD system with LCD monitors in the headrests.

If the vehicle does make it to final production, it will probably have a sticker price of about $110,000, said Brent Fenimore, vice president of Shelby Automobiles, the auto manufacturing arm of Carroll Shelby International (Research).

Versions with a slightly less powerful engine could also be produced and sold in larger numbers for about $75,000, he said. Based on reactions from show attendees and Ford executives, the Shelby Expedition will likely be produced at least in small numbers, Fenimore said.

The company called the Expedition the first in a series of products that the company is considering. Carroll Shelby officially rekindled his relationship with Ford Motor Co. (Research) last year after acting as a consultant on the Ford GT supercar. The GT recently began selling at a sticker price of about $140,000.

A similar version of the F-150 pick-up is also being considered, said Fenimore. The company is also working on a line of Shelby-branded performance parts for Ford vehicles, he said.

Shelby Automotive is currently working on the new Shelby Mustang, altough no timeline has been set for its production, Fenimore said. The company is planning to produce a racing version of the car before it produces a version for street use, he said.

"We want to beat the snot out of everybody on the racetrack first and use that data," he said.

Ford and Shelby first worked together about 40 years ago, a partnership that created the high-powered Shelby Mustangs coveted today by muscle car collectors. In 1965, Ford hired Shelby to help with the GT40 race car it was designing. That car was the inspiration for the new Ford GT.

Prior to working with Ford, Shelby had created the famous Shelby AC Cobra sports car, which used a Ford V-8 engine.
I saw this in today's CNN/MONEY and thought it was too ricey for my tastes.

Yeah the body kit looks a little to big the whole thing looks like they slapped a bunch of stuff from a Ford Racing catalog into the vehicle.....I would sure hope that carol shelby didn't put alot of effort into that...If he probably did it himself from scratch it would of been way better looking and had a bigger engine And a true shelby has the dashboard autographed...

I sort of find this whole thing a little sad. I don't know why. Maybe it's that they keep intruducing these souped up trucks that are sort of ok at everything but great at nothing. For instance, you would never take that thing off road and probably never even in the snow as you would a regular truck. It's spacious inside, but if you really want space, there's other way's to go. It has all the luxury items that prople think they need like rear DVD's etc. but statistics show that the vast majority of the time people drive alone or with one passenger (even if you have kids, you're probably not going to tote them around in a 550 HP SUV). I'm sure it's pretty fast but nowhere near an average sports car, or even some sporty cars, for that matter. Don't get me started on the handling. Anyway, I just think it's a little sad that Shelby is giving his name and expertise to a project like this.

Not particularly impressed, myself. I don't really care for the interior, and the exterior seems so "tacked on." I dunno, maybe I'm not giving it the benefit of the doubt.

You'd be shocked at how fast even an SUV or truck can move with that kind of power.

The Ford Lightning for example in a straight line at least will beat the pants off of most things on the road bone stock. And when lightly modded they are well capable of taking down Corvettes.

That being said I don't think Shelby had much to do with this. Looks like another case of I'll sell you my name and you can slap it on a bunch on nonesense.
They should have been spending the time and money on a Shelby Mustang. I want a GT350 so bad I can taste it.

What was Carroll thinking when he agreed to design this monstrosity, or did he just take the endorsement money and run?

Too bad.

It wouldnt be that bad if it werent for the bodykit, the hood, the projection headlights, or the fender flares. the interiors ok i guess. The fading 2 tone paint job is kinda cool.

It looks like every other souped-up/riced-up specialty SUV out there, sans tucking the wheels.

I certainly hope Carroll Shelby didn't put his own personal work into this...

Please tell me this is a joke and was posted in the wrong forum...The new GT is a beautiful car and should have the "shelby" name, but this monstrosity pictured above is pure sacrilege to the shelby name, as would be an F150. The shelby name belongs to cars...high performance, beautifully fast cars. Not glorified grocery getters.

Yeah, can we say "Lingenfelter Escalade"? 12.7 second 1/4 mile, chest-rumbling sound at idle, physically painful to stand next to at WOT. For 145,000 I'll take one of those over this ... thing.

That is just one sad vehicle..

What happened to the days where design was appealing to the eyes and not just flashy nothingness.

So what we are looking at here is the base model? Or did the owner trick it out and make it look as unappealing as it does?

Yet another ugly vehicle design. More plastic add-ons does not equal pretty. Interrior looks nice though.

Looks over the top, but then a lot of those performance SUV type things from America do. Though it's amusing to say it'd be a performance SUV when it probably can't handle corners for shit.

When I first say the pics I was a bit 'ooooooh', but now I've actually looked at them properly, it looks incredibly plasticy.../shit, also, and someone saying the interior looks nice? Am I the only person who would expect a better interior for $110 000? It just looks a bit...plain
