Can I be Masculine & still want a VW convertable?

with the price of gas & all, i want to get out of (keep & stop driving everyday) my 1998 dodge 1500 quad cab full size bed, can i still retain my manhood & proudly enjoy driving a new VW bug convertable?

I guess...but it would seem most odd. Like seeing a dude in a Mini or a guy over 6 foot wedged into a Miata.
I can think of things that are economic but aren't as "girlie" as a Bug.
I mean even in the VW line up you could get a Jetta that's some what sporty has similar fuel economy and at least would be some what masculine.

i suspected as much - but a simple search of vw.com did not list any other convertables...

what if i promised not to get the 'daisy wheels'?

is there any kind of bumper skicker (no rainbows) i could use to push me 'over the top'?

There's no way around it. No man can be masculine in a freakin' bug.

Granted, that's my opinion, which you asked for, and I'll subject you to it for free.

There are other convertables on the market. From a quality standpoint, and even in the same family (VW/Audi) is the 2005 Audi A4 Cabriolet. Granted, the A4 is priced about 15 grand north of the bug. But what a wonderful way to spend money. (I see the bugme is priced at $20,900 for a roof-less model, off of the VW website.)
If you can't swing the A4, might I suggest a convertable Mini? I don't know if they're charging a price premium on these little guys, but their convertable sticker is only $1,500 over the dungbeetle.

That's a small price to pay to keep your dignity.

For $22,165 you can look at a Chrysler PT convertable. If you want...I guess...that one's an option. Much more appealing than the PT is the Sebring Convertable. But, now we're up to $25k, basically.

If any of that helps keep you out of a bug, then I'm happy.
If you must drive a bug, get one, and screw my opinion!!!
(But every time I see you nance by in your girly car, just know, I'll be thinking "what a pussy...")

My sister-in-law got a regular Bug, and has been having lots of trouble with it. She had to get it towed one time, and the towtruck driver said that VW's quality control was way down recently, he was towing a lot of VWs.

Oddly enough today at school I walked past an old school bug.

It was flat black the interior had been ripped out had bigger tires and looked to be fairly modded. That little thing wasn't girly...wasn't overly butch but it wasn't a puss mobile. So I suppose to make it work you need to gut your car paint it flat black and mod the hell out of it.

my friend won tickets to a NASCAR race, and offered one to me. he even offered to drive, which i thought was great until he rolled up in his girlfriend's yellow beetle.

you do NOT want to go to a NASCAR race, in Texas, in a yellow beetle.

I would not stoop to tie my shoes in front of a guy that owned a VW convertible. Older sedan bugs are cool, you aren't automatically a pantywaist there.

Speaking of automatically, IF you do get a new Beetle cabrio (what they call convertibles) don't get a goddamn automatic or a faggy color or even the Village People will laugh at you.

sorry man, I have to side with the "no" crowd. Especially in TX. Billage made some nice suggestions, or you could always get a motorcycle, nothing says "masculine" or "good mileage" like a bike.

A co-worker and I drove a Turbo S Beetle to Detroit and back for business, and it was fun to drive. Even with our lead feet, it got 32mpg on the highway. I'd buy that one. If I was to buy a diesel VW, it'd be the new Passat 2.0 TDI. But, I'm not likely to buy a VW anyways, what with the electrical gremlins that pop up WAY too frequently.

I guess if you want a droptop with decent mileage, decent performance and a reasonabe price tag, I would look at the Mazdaspeed Miata. While it still has a little of its gay stigma, it handles something fierce, factory turboe'd, and now looks more like a mini-viper than a fruitmobile.

I wouldn't rule out VW Beetles in general.

My uncle had one of those Turbo S additions, and i'll admit It was pretty nice. Silver, tinted windows, 6-speed manual, all natural aluminum/black interior, blue glow gauges, special spoiler that pops up at like 60mph or something. Quick too. And he looked pretty good driving it. I was jealous

Then he traded it in for a Touareg. I like Touaregs too

3 days ago, I would have said no. But after test driving the 5 valves per cylinder, 150 hp turbo convertable, I have to say that all is vindicated for the bug in my eyes. You have to drive this car. It is responsive, roomy, clean, and makes up for the fact that it should have a flower sticker on the hood. I can understand your question, and it is fair. It seems girly on the surface. When I see one drive by, I look to see if there is some hot co-ed driving it. But don't worry about it.

Remember that 'stock' is a state of mind. I suggest getting a very tasteful bodykit, like the Erebuni Kit 935 (from http://www.andysautosport.com/bodyki...?id=Vo98Beetle) . It looks clean and almost stock. It might give a more masculine edge to this iMac of cars.
