Ford Escape Brake Pads

My girlfriend has a 2002 Ford Escape with 50000kms on it. It's in for maint right now and the dealership just called her and told her she needs new brake pads as there is only 10% left of the pads. This seems pretty bogus to me cause 50K isn't that much IMO.

Does anyone else have an Escape or any experience with this type of thing?

EDIT: Oh, it's an automatic tranny.

Well they could be right....it depends on how harsh your gf is on the brakes....I've known people with cheapo brake pads to get only 25,000 miles on a set...also her rotors could of been bad which would eat up brake pads....you could look yourself and you'll easily tell if they are significantly worn.

Yeah, was planning on taking a look at them myself anyway. However, she has since called me back twice, the first time to tell me that not only the pads have gone south, but so have the roters... WTF?

Then she called again and armed with a little knowledge that I was able to impart on her she convinced them to replace the rotors for free and do the pads for $200. It's not ideal, but that's the way it goes with heavy (sorta) vehicles and automatic transmissions in the city.

Holy shit...do the pads for $200!!!!!!!!!! wtf....Well my experience pads can run about $20-$35 a set for the front and the rotors can cost $50 a pop...and it takes up to 2 hours (depending if some shit if froze up). What is the breakdown on the price of parts?

The pads themselves are $100 and change and the labour makes up the rest. I should point out that I am in Canada so prices don't translate across the boarder.

I called another shop and got the same price quote for pads and labour...so that's the way it is.... :(

Well my friend told me at a muffler place they charge $150 american to do pads and rotors, not including parts...I guess I never knew the price since I always did them myself.

I have carbon metallic pads, they cost me $45 for the front ones (rear has drums) and they've lasted me about 15k miles. Commuting sucks.

Brake pads go all over the place as far as wear is concerned. When I worked in a dealership pad life ranged from 10,000 miles on the low end for agressive drivers up to 40,000 miles on the high end for nonaggressive drivers. Some of the newer vehicles had a different compund pad that just lasted forever, somtimes more than 80,000 miles. Prices were all over the place too, from $20 to $120 for a set of pads.

Yeah it turns out Ford but shitty pads and rotors on the 02 Escapes, apparently I did better than most. Well at least they did the rotors on warrenty.
