My friends 1970 Ford LTD

Well my friend just recently acquired a 1970 Ford LTD. Its in pretty mint shape and this thread about the progress about making it show quality.
He plans on taking this car to car shows since it's so mint. It hasn't been driven since about 1999 and has always been kept in a heated garage for all it's life, he is the second owner. The car has a C6 Transmission and has a 390 2BBl Carb. First thing we did was to check the fluids, they where all ok..so then we pumped out all the old gas and put fresh new gas in it. Then we tried to start it, then I noticed the spark plug were arcing from the end of the boots to the outer hex head of the spark plugs....So we picked up wires, plugs and an air filter for $26. Then we notices the carb pumped out of the top all over the intake manifold. The problem was a stuck float needle, so we tore the top of the carb apart and fixed it. It then ran like a champ...we still need to change the oil and fix the brakes for it to be driveable. Future plans for the car will be to convert it from points style to pertronik electronic conversion kit. And highly detail the car, well here are the pics, let me know what you think.

Looks awesome. Please don't butcher it like 90% of the people on www.cardomain.com or www.sounddomain.com. 20" rims and candy apple paint jobs......leave it how it is!

It'll be awesome once you get it running smooth

Nah no butchering at all. All we plan on doing is putting a nice set of 15" keystones on it just for car shows.

So far we have had some problems. We where doing brake stands on day (good way to make sure an older cars brakes can take some abuse) and we blew out the main back line (had a nice size rust hole through it) so we went to the autoparts store and $15 later we fixed it. Brakes still are a little mushy, I think it's the master cylinder which will be cheap and easy.

The ignition switch is bad too. Turn the key but it doesn't shut off. But thats a cheap fix. Plus the high beam indicator light burnt out. We did replace the dimmer switch which helps out alot. (the old one was corroded so bad it wouldn't even click)

Another problem is the tranny pan gasket leaks pretty bad. 2 quarts in a week.
The only other thing we might do is put some headers and some nice exhaust.
She runs great now :)

Pretty cool, I used to have a '72 LTD w/the 351W, no where near mint shape though. :)

That Caprice is burning my eyes.

I like the LTD though, enjoy the restoration damn I wish I was doing that now instead of being in school, have a blast guys keep us posted on the progress.

Wow that is nice for a 34 year old car. A little detailing and viola. Some redline tires would look slick on that sucker.

My first car was a 70 LTD...what a rush to see it...when they allow us to post pics again send some more out.....keep an eye on the rear diff though because the bolts seem to work themselves loose after that long....it may be worth your while to change out the fluid and have them retorqued ....good luck at the shows

You've got the basics of a good stock winner. Don't go goofing it up with non-factory mods. That's just.............wrong.

I have some pics I'll post after we detailed it. Damn it does look nice :) We parked it for the winter now so this spring we'll do some major work on it. Hopefully we can get rid of all of the problems.
