Saw that on yesterday's news. Bet the driver of the red car sues the reporter for being a distraction.....

catback 09-18-2004 11:52 AM

They can sue but very doubtable they will win. The news team wasn't blocking her view of on-coming traffic and they weren't trying to distract traffic. Looks like the car wasn't looking at on-coming traffic before deciding to cross. Maybe looked at the clear intersection when it first stopped and then stared at the news team for a moment then looked at the van crossing and thought it was clear to cross but in that scenario it's the cars own fault for not checking for traffic before entering the intersection. Personally I think that's what happened.

look both ways twice...

noblejr 09-18-2004 07:46 PM

I agree. Seems the driver didn't wait for the white van blocking the view to oncoming traffic to pass through the intersection before it took off.

Destrox 09-20-2004 05:10 AM

Zero fault for the truck, van, and reporter. Just a driver who didnt follow the common sense laws of driving.

BUT

The reporter and camera person pissed me off, how can they just STAND THERE and not even attempt to see if the people need help! What the fuck is wrong with people!!!!

KirStang 09-20-2004 07:16 AM

"We just saw a major accident bla bla bla...."

Dude, go help the people. Ass.

Glory's Sun 09-20-2004 08:33 AM

geesh, what a moron (reporter) maybe the car should hit him instead. Other than that I highly doubt anyone will sue considering they have all of it on tape and the other car was coming from the opposite direction than the reporter.

on a side note did the person in the car survive??

RaDiAn 09-20-2004 08:59 AM

oopps..... That was really bad, I hope everyone was ok.

Mantus 09-20-2004 11:44 AM

What the fuck is wrong with that reporter and camera crew!? They just stood there...

09-20-2004 01:01 PM

what do u expect for them to do? they called 911 immediately. the guy in the truck got out. the woman was still in her car. she probably suffered injuries and shouldnt be moved. i think they did the right thing by calling 911 immediately.

cxnaj20 09-21-2004 02:10 PM

Totally the car's fault. I also don't understand why the reporter is just sitting there...ass.

Everyone pay your respects to cxnaj20. Obviously, cxnaj20 drops everything and runs to help anyone who needs it, even if cxnaj20 doesn't know the first thing about how to help.

I'm sure that in this situation, cxnaj20 would have rushed right over to the car and dragged the driver right out and started pounding on his chest. Never mind whether that would have helped him or killed him, the important bit is that cxnaj20 went over and did something, right?

Look, the guy's a reporter. And FYI he's a reporter that's green as hell - and so is his photog. I know this will come as a great big shock to you guys, but they don't teach EMS training in journalism school.

I've been in the TV news business for WAY too long, and you won't catch me "helping" in that situation either. I have no desire to kill someone, and since I don't know what the hell I'm doing with first response, there's a good chance that that's exactly what I'd end up doing.

What I WOULD do is exactly what that reporter/photog team did. Make sure the people at the station know EXACTLY what's going on and where so that they can pass the info along to 911. I'd also make sure the viewers knew EXACTLY what's going on and where because it's pretty likely that someone from EMS is watching and it'd be nice for them to get a head start on the call (this, btw, is exactly what happened - EMS was rolling their trucks before the 911 call got out). After that i'd close the shot out and make sure nothing was on fire - that's what the photog did after running back to the live truck to grab his fire extinguisher.

What that crew did is exactly what I would have wanted one of my crews to do. If they'd run over and started meddling around trying to "help" the victim without proper first responder training, I'd make it patently clear that they were NEVER to do that again.

I watched that thing three times, it is crazy that the report or the cameraman did not do anything but sit and watch.

You're wrong. As soon as the shot was over the reporter ran to the truck to check on the driver and the photog grabbed the fire extinguisher and ran to the car to make sure it wasn't on fire - turns out that what looked like smoke was steam from the radiator so he didn't need to use it.

But thanks for playing.

wakelagger 09-24-2004 07:16 AM

With a major accident like that, any movement of the injured person's body can result in paralysis. If any part of the neck gets fractured, the nerves that reside inside the neck can easily be severed, and that damage will hardly ever repair itself. EMS puts the neck support collars on people who might not even have a chance of a neck injury, just to be safe.
Wouldn't you love to be the fast acting green-horn reporter that completely changes someones life for the worse?
