Tyre Smoke

Does anybody know why tyres leave black marks when you do a "burnout" but the tyre smoke is white?????

Why is it so????

JStrider 07-31-2004 10:43 AM

well i know they leave a black mark cuz your melting black rubber onto the ground...

Reese 07-31-2004 12:14 PM

I could be totally wrong here, but I thought it's the friction between tire and asphalt causing the smoke, and not the actual tire burning.

The overcoming of friction releases energy. That energy is heat. Heat burns the rubber. Tires are black because they contain carbon black. Natural rubber is actually whitish. Also, the temperatures created do not get hot enough to completely burn the rubber. That is why the smoke is white, but the marks are black. Look at a stick that has been charred in a fire. It's smoke is white, but it is blackened. Burn it in a hot enough fire, and it turns to white ash.

Doesn't really matter to me just looks cool:D

that's true, that is what they use for "burnout demos" at car shows etc.

thanks guys i guess that clears that up

That's because bleach dissolves the rubber.

Not movie-style melting tires, but it takes a few molecular layers off so there's somehting between the pavement and tire to lubricate. If only first can burn the tires, you need to play with it, adjust the ratios, give it more power, whatever.

I have a '93 Caravan (borrowing from uncle until mom gets a new car) that chirps the tires into third while going 40. I fully expect the transmission to fall out within a month. Imagine this sequence of sounds: thud thud thud grind chirp thud *shift* thud grind.

actually, overcoming the force of friction has nothing to do with the heat created, strictly speaking. the energy needed to scrub the tire along the ground has to be dissipated in some way, hence the heat.

Not a clue, but they all sound like good ideas and or facts. I seen someone use motor oil on a front wheeldrive car, and that smoked like hell after it got going...

catback 08-02-2004 01:13 PM

Sounds like we got mad scientists here

roofles 08-04-2004 10:08 AM

as for maximum tire smoking effect, i've heard of drifters soaking the tire in diesel the night before an exhibition. for some reason id prefer this rather than breathing in the mess that water and bleach makes. then again, i don't think breathing tire + anything smoke is very nice...

i could be wrong though

big_bubba 08-08-2004 06:31 AM

I love the smell of smoking tires... :D

I saw a picture one time of some crazy ass drag car that lit the rear tires on fire. I'll try to dig it up, it was pretty funny.

I have that poster. 'Big Daddy' Don Garlits doing a fire burnout. Cool as hell. :)
