throttle problem.. easy fix?
my parents has this 94 corolla and theres something wrong with the gas pedal. you really have to push the pedal down to the floor to make engine reach a higher rpm. like when going up a hill you really have to push the pedal to the floor to get up it. its somewhat annoying.
anyone have any idea how to fix it? thanks |
Sounds like the cable could be kinked...or it just needs to be lubed. You should look in the engine compartment to see if its bound up some where...and to lube it spray some wd-40 down the cable.

Yikes! Don't use WD-40...use a white lithium grease...MUCH better. Although, that behavior sounds somewhat normal. Be more specific in what you're describing. Usually, bringing the engine revs up significantly involves pressing the throttle down a bit.

its just not down a bit. i mean i have to push the pedal all the way down to the floor until it cannot go any farther and thats when the engine revs up.

check the cable linkage at the throttle body (a metal thing that a round black hose from the air cleaner connects to on top of the engine) and see if you can rev the engine there easier. This will tell you if the problem is actually the throttle cable.

sounds like there is possibly just a bunch of slack in the throttle cable. If manually turning the throttle plate works, it should be a real cheap fix, or even free if your up to doing it yourself.

Sounds like it could be a clogged catalytic converter. When they go bad, it runs fine until you jump on the gas, then it feels gutless and very slow to rev up. Also, do you have a check engine light? Sometimes when certain sensors go bad, that light will turn on and it'll run with reduced power.

That happened to me when a head cracked and there was little to no compression in three cylinders. At full throttle, the other 5 could pick up some of the slack, but it took full throttle to get much above idle

MrSelfDestruct you were right! It was a cracked header! Its an old car so we just had the crack welded shut. Thanks!.. o man, this forum is awesome!
