if you're going to drive something sporty at that age, you're screwed.
Also take into consideration the grades you got/are getting in HS, they actually effect the price of insurance for some stupid reason. |
A big issue is your insurance carrier. Younger drivers should shop insurance at EVERY renewal. I am not saying to switch every time, but make sure you shop around. Different companies focus on different ages. A company that was much higher last year may be considerably cheaper this year. Also blaming your inability to control your vehicle on your "shitty stock tires" won't help you learn from a mistake we have all made, yours was just pricey for you. You and only you are responsible for knowing the limits of your car AND it's tires. Sorry for going off you but I just see me years ago blaming everyone but me for my learning lessons.

I'm not going to sugar-coat anything for you. Have fun bending over and paying for the next 7 years.
Yup about 23-25 is when they drop...by a $250 beater and put liability on it.....otherwise it's expensive...unless you insure under you mom and dad's name...
Get married, that will drop insurance. Plus, speaking from someone who was once your age, the wrx is a lot of car, and insurance companies know that .
Well, to reference...
I'm 23, drive a beat up '91 Geo Tracker with liabilty and theft. I pay just under $600 a year. I recently called for a quote on a Miata for full coverage and was quoted $950 a year. I live in Ohio, have a clean record, and keep insurance with USAA. |
Its gonna be privey for you for a long time. Three main reason, your young, you've totaled a car ( thats mainly whats gonna rape you), and you have a WRX. Its gonna be a while before you get your rates down. even once your older, its still a WRX, and you've still totaled a car... that ones gonna be with you for a couple years.
I give $85/mnth for full coverage on the '97 Cutlass, and liability on a '87 Delta 88. I've got a couple of tickets, in the last year, and they know about one. The accidents are gone!
I'm 20, paying $225/month for full coverage on my '98 Malibu. That'll go down at the end of august, because my one ticket (speeding in excess: >20mph over) will fall off. That should reduce it to about $150 a month.
i just turned 21 a month or so ago. my insurrance went down $65 a month with State Farm. but it all depends on what insurrance company you have.
Sheesh, I'm 21 and I pay about 25-30 a month for liability for my '90 Honda Accord. Good ol' Allstate.
I'm 32, married, and carry 3 cars with Liability, Comprehensive, and rental, all for about $70/month

you can ask the dmv for your record and see how many points you have on your record. i don't remember how many points you get for totalling a car but it's probably 3.
my friend's 21 with a honda prelude and has 5 pts. one more and his license is taken, i believe. he pays about $5k a year i believe, pretty rediculous. i mean you can buy a new (used) car every year for that much. and he could buy another prelude in 2 years. pfft. anyway, when i was taking driver's training i was talking to the guy about the point system and asked about accidents. he said they gauge accidents on the same point system, and it's really points that raise your insurance. apparently there's no checkbox on the insurance form that says "totalled a car." there's a box that says how many pts you have though. so if you want to really know you can ask the dmv for a copy of your record and it should tell you know many pts you have and what is exactly reported to the insurance agency. you don't need to tell them more than what's on your public record. so for example, you get a speeding ticket, 1 pt offense. you go to traffic school, get that point removed. on your public record, it's clean. however, technically you've still got an infraction, a point on your record. the insurance asks, "have you ever had a speeding ticket?" you're allowed to answer "no" because it doesn't show up. you don't have to be too eager, screaming "yes i had a ticket!" don't quote me on this though, this is what i heard from the traffic instructor guy, who also happened to be the sheriff. only some places count your grades. i've heard of people forging report cards and bringing those in for deductions on their insurnace. others don't care. generally if you've gone 3 years with a clean record, i hear that's the first milestone most carriers drop your premiums at. not that that really matters in your case i guess. MrSelfDestruct was pretty dead on though. you're screwed and will be paying for it for a long time. best bet's to get a beater until you're making enough money or your record clears up. |

What everyone else said. I worked in an insurance office since I was 14 and we quoted many a college student in your similar situation/age with premiums upwards of $2k for 6 months. Your accident will stay on your record for 3 years, then it will go away. Try to get good grades. Most companies offer a discount to students with a 3.0 or better. My insurance company also gave a 10% discount to me brcause i went in and watched a silly 15 minute safety video and took a little safety quiz.
My advice to you is shop around. Dont go with comapanies like Farmers or State Farm, as those are geared towards people who have multiple cars and also Home insurance. Try some of those cheap places that advertise ALL THE FREAKIN TIME on daytime TV. edit: looks like you beat me to my reply! good luck with it all. |
I pay $90 a month for liability, collision, and uninsured motorist coverage on my '91 Corsica. I'm 24, and turn 25 in two weeks. My insurance will drop to about $65 a month in a couple of weeks. It sucks that it is so expensive, considering my car is only worth about $700 and I have a perfect driving record over the past 9 years, no tickets, no accidents.
Another thing you may want to look into is a beater for daily driving and just drive the WRX occasionally (wink wink) many times with a multiple car discount and the newer car listed as diven occasionally you can save big dollars, especially with certain companies. And yes I agree many stock tires suck major ass, it is amazing how much difference tires can make in bad weather.
Shit, I'm 27, no accidents and only 1 ticket. I still pay over $1500 a year, and I only drive a Civic.
the problem with civics is all the retard racer kids get them and crash em. so naturally they will have a high insurance rate compared to other car in their class.
yea, it's not uncommon for someone to spend as much as they did on their civic itself or even more for mods to put on
Also civic's and accords are the some of the most stolen cars.
