M5 Powertrain. Would a 4.8 V8 have been better?
Great engineering exercise, but IMHO this is engineering for engineering's sake. Mind you, I am not belittling the work of the engineers.<p> Not happy about the torque curve, not that people really exploit such cars to the fullest.....still a flat plane V-8 of 4.8 L with similar attention levels would have been better, IMO. Lighter too. Oh well.<p>

Very impressive engine. It looks huge though. A single head looks as big as entire engines in some econoboxes. I wonder what it weighs.
I think the high reving character is a good choice. An M5 is supposed to be a novelty. If you don't need that much power, get a regular 5-series. If you want gobs of silent torque at any rpm, get a Benz. I think this will fill an interesting niche. |
