good thing you said a couple years old....because Car&Driver did a show on the X3 and the guy hated the thing, anything he could say bad he said...I was laughing, mostly because I don't like the new Beamers |

if you have any plans of ever leaving the road don't go with the x3 but if you want a fun car it is real good make sure to test drive because a lot of people say the x3 is too stiff

If you can spend 34K and off-road'ing is important to you. (not sure why anyone would want to take a 40K vehicle off road but) get a used Disco II by Land Rover. One hell of a machine. (talking from experience)

I drove the X3 about a week ago...run, run like the wind. Numb steering, f'ed up transmission, especially the clutch which has no feel and a really weird point of uptake( i tried consistently for about an hour, but could not get a smooth shift from 1st to 2nd...). The best thing about it was the seat and general build-quality which was as you expect in a Beamer. Also, I think it looks like the gay littlebrother of the X5...skinnier, more feminine, and less grunt. I'd get a used X5 if you really wanna go with BMW. But if you want to offroad, a used Disco like iamtheone mentioned.

They do much better in recent years, but yes, they are quite bad for that.
