C230 Kompressor

I did some work this weekend at a Benz Dealer and I got to check out the C230 Kompressor Sport Sedan. I fell in love with it. I'm thinking of trading in my '99 C280 for it.

Anyone have one or has driven one. I'm not ready to get it yet so I didn't want to test drive it till I am.

And I know MB has had some quality problems lately but from looking at the complaints they mostly apply to the E class or S class sedans. Don't hear much about the C classes having lots of problems.

I want the lighting package as an option and I was thinking about the Command system as well but that's where most of the problems are with the E classes. Also wondering the differences between the Kompressor and the V6. V6 has more power but the Kompressor has a more torque at lower rpms. 0-60 times are not much different.

And please don't tell me that I should something else. I don't want something else. I need opinions on this vehicle not others please.

I have heard great things about the super chargers on the Kompressor sports sedans.

Unfortunately the quality issues I have also heard about were specific to the little C class MBs and not the E or S classes?

My old man is into his Mercedes big time. Current rides are an e55 and clk rag top. He is obviously quite fond of this brand and knows his stuff. It is from him that I learned about the super charger, and the recent build quality issues specific to the lower end C class mercs.

My humble opinions formed from knowledge once removed

I drove one once, and wasn't that impressed. My main complaint was that the interior is so uncomfortable. It looks so well made, and then you sit down and feel like you're on a park bench.

I have an SLK 230 Kompressor and it does have hard seats. Difference is I like it that way. When I drive my wife's Ford now it feels like I'm navigating a sofa down the highway.

Krycheck - go to these sites:

They have sub-forums for every kind of MB ever made. Lots of good info.

I feel that with MB, you get less car for your money than you do with other companies. True, you get tons of nifty little gadgets, but if you want a car for the driving experience (as opposed to the riding experience) I would look into other options.

My '99 C280 gives me both and I hope the C230 does the same. Guess I'll know when I finally drive it.

I guess some of us like the park bench feel, I know I do

And yeah Keysersoze does work at a MBZ dealer. I know he can give an un-biased opinion even tho he sells them.

I can get you a good deal on one of those if you want....but...no the problems that you are hearing about are not on the C class as it is with the E and S.

Most of the problems are Programming and Software issues on those models.

Don't get the Nav system though because it really is not that good of a system....actually IT SUCKS!!

If you and when you decide...get the Kompressor, but in all reality check out the new Acura TL. For the money you're getting a whole lot more and a WAAAAYYY better Nav system, more HP...and a lot better value for the dollars bills.

Also you need to take into account that the Mercedes C Class depreciates alot more then the Acura because they are making way to damn many of them.

Either way whatever you decide on....I'll be glad to help.

Ps. They really don't make Mercedes like they did in the 90's and before...the quality is suffering and ANY honest MBZ mechanic will tell you that. The C280 you have was one of their best C classes

I dont get the deal with the RWD vs FWD.. you're not gonna be hitting turns at 80... the TL has a great LSD... and even my best friend, who is a big RWD fan, was raving about my car when I let him drive it.

I'd have to try the TL to compare, but I always feel like I'm about to fly off the road or skid into a ditch with FWD. I learned to drive on a massive RWD machine, and I wouldn't want it any other way. Unfortunately, what I want and what I get are different things.

I've just got back from Louisiana, where I was tooling around in my Brother's c230k compact.
I liked it. Very smart, and seemed very well built - in contrast to most of the reports I'd seen. The interior is lovely, and the Komand system we found to be extremely helpful, having spent the earlier part of the holiday getting hopelessly lost around the bayous in a peachy Lexus LS400
The steering is good, linear and accurate.
The engine I wasn't so fond of. It has useful grunt from low revs, but fails to live up to that early promise in the higher ranges, I'm afraid. It also sounds rather uncouth; coarse in a way the V6 option would not be. Almost diesel - like, even.
I turned the ESP off every time I got into the car. I'm silly like that, I suppose; and I can't begin to tell you how funny this car was in the wet with no traction control. Ridiculous, and I think I know why: Bro' ordered huge wheels with rubber band tyres.
If you get such a car then I'd strongly advise you not to tick that option. The unforgiving rubber meant that the car was almost skipping sideways on every highway expansion joint. Quite scary, in fact.
If you like the style, go for it. This was a very smart car that attracted a number of appreciative comments from the jazzfest ravers; the whole thing oozes quality, and while I wouldn't buy one for myself I can certainly see the appeal.
