Newsflash: Hummer Guzzles Gas

May 6

DETROIT (Reuters) - Hummer owners, frustrated with the vehicle's excessive fuel consumption, ranked the SUV last in a benchmark poll of vehicle quality, according to a survey released by J.D. Power and Associates on Tuesday.

In the group's annual survey of consumers during the first 90 days of ownership, General Motors Corp.'s highly profitable Hummer brand had 225 complaints per 100 vehicles. By comparison, the top-ranked Lexus, by Toyota Motor Corp., had 76 complaints per 100 vehicles.

Gary Cowger, president of GM North America, said the H2's fuel consumption was the No. 1 complaint among owners, outpacing the No. 2 gripe -- that the SUV's headlights were aimed too high -- by a 2-1 margin. GM has fixed the headlight problem, Cowger said.

At 6,400 pounds (2,903 kg), the Hummer H2 is so heavy it falls outside U.S. regulations on fuel economy. Unlike other passenger cars and trucks, GM does not have to display the gas mileage on the window sales sticker of the H2 at dealerships. Hummer estimates the military-inspired SUV gets 11 to 13 miles per gallon.

J.D. Power conducted its survey of 52,000 U.S. owners and lessees earlier this year when the price of gas spiked higher.

"There's a very close correlation between the price of gasoline at the pump and the incidence of excessive fuel consumption problems," Brian Walters, director of product research with J.D. Power, told Reuters.

Hummer's thirst for gas certainly has not hurt sales. Hummer is the only GM division that has sold vehicles this year without costly sales incentives, such as the zero percent financing offer that has swept the industry.

Simple statement: I still love 'em to death and would consider ownership.

How 'bout you?

Deuce66 05-06-2003 06:34 PM

I like the original Hummer, but the H2 is a piece of crap, IMO. =)

rs8001 05-06-2003 06:42 PM

Just last night my brother said he'd been to an auto show. Of all the vehicles there they Hummer and a massive Ford dually crew cab the were only ones without the estimated MPG displayed. I guess I know why now.

Pretty stupid to buy a vehicle and not consider its fuel usage if it is something you're going to be sensitive and complain about later. I don't suppose that is something the salesmen point out at the dealership though.

Same here. If they were in my price range I wouldn't care about the gas milage. For what they cost I'd buy a BMW M3 though.

ditto

charliex 05-06-2003 09:43 PM

every man and their dog seems to have an H2 around these parts, its insanity.

still you have to think "duh" when you read about people complaining about gas mileage, whats next tyres too expensive to replace ? doesn't corner well at high speeds ?

splck 05-06-2003 10:22 PM

The H2's are butt ugly, even the first ones released look rediculous. I don't see the appeal of those units. I do alot of 4x4ing and I've never seen one of them out in the bush.
I chuckle at the city slickers that think they look cool in them.

TequilaJr 05-06-2003 11:10 PM

Yeah, it really seems silly that the people that bought these are now complaining about the fuel mileage. Does it really come as a surprise to them that they have to shell out that much $ for gas now? If they want fuel economy, they should buy a Civic. That being said, if I had the money where I could afford to buy one myself, I'd get one in an instant.

impirius7 05-06-2003 11:40 PM

if i had to have a hummer, i would definitely take the first one. but i would much rather take the money and buy a BMW and a hayabusa. i live in an upscale area and i see H2s everywhere, it is kind of annoying actually.

Cynthetiq 05-07-2003 06:12 AM

AHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAH my icelandic friends get a kick out of the Hummer...Hummer in Iceland TV Spots

They love to wait until they get stuck and then pull them out with a real super jeep.

If you buy a fucking hummer do you think its going to get gas milage? This is the apitamy of america, buy a big ass truck and then bitch that it gets bad gas mileage.

If you wanted gas milage buy a honda!

merkerguitars 05-07-2003 06:17 AM

Ok that big of vehicle that isn't aerodynamic...what the hell did those people expect!!!!!!!! If they want the damn gas mileage buy a freaking honda hybrid.. If I where to buy a hummber I would buy an ex military one due to its stripped out and all ready for ultimate offroading :)

hrdwareguy 05-07-2003 09:47 AM

As already stated, who thinks these things are going to get good gas mileage to begin with? It's about as aerodynamic as a brick.

Would I own one? Hell yeah if it was in my price range.

YELLOW450 05-07-2003 12:41 PM

Hummer and gas mileage don't go in the same sentence.

Hummer and bad gas mileage sure do.

Also speaking of the ugly H2 does anyone have pics of the Studebaker H2 rip-off shown around 2001-2002?

Ashton 05-08-2003 03:35 AM

Since when does gas mileage matter to someone that is paying just as much for their car/truck/suv payment..... that most people spend on their rent?

Radiospank 05-08-2003 10:02 AM

Man i Love my honda 360 miles per fill up

edmos1 05-08-2003 01:54 PM

who thought when they bought an H2 that it was going to get great gas mileage. it gets exstimated 11-13, that is not too bad the last years of the Ford Bronco it was getting 13-14 mpg

DEI37 05-08-2003 02:55 PM

You sure about that? I thought bad mileage consisted of less than 10mpg on average! I hate this SUV craze that this country has right now. It's pathetic. Now, to be a hypocrite, I love Suburban's, and I'd love to get a hold of a Crew Cab, one ton, diesel pickup.

fublas 05-09-2003 01:45 AM

The Hummer is a very unique and exotic car. It has bad gas mileage... who gives a crap. If the owners have a problem with that they have no business buy that type of vehicle in the first place.

Spyder_Venom 05-09-2003 06:10 AM

I still think if they can afford a 60k truck they can foot the 10 MPG

BoCo 05-09-2003 10:55 AM

If you can afford to buy the thing, then you probably have enough money for gas.

I suspect some left-wing, tree-hugging group is making these complaints, and not the actual owners.

monster 05-09-2003 07:43 PM

if you can afford an H2, you aren't worried about gas mileage.

lt1s10 05-09-2003 07:59 PM

If they paid that much money for an H2 then gas shouldn't be problem. If you put out that much money without thinking about what it'd cost to keep it on the road then it's your own fault.

If I'm spending that kind of money an M5 would be my choice. At this point looks like I won't get the chance to ever own a new one though.

Reese 05-10-2003 02:18 AM

Its not about the price of gas. Its about having to stop EVERY time you go somewhere. You fill up, drive to work, drive home, drive to gas station, repeat... Its something you have to do EVERY time you get in the car. you wanna go out and travel in the middle of no where, you better move those sleeping bags over and fill up with gas cans. wait... What am I talking about. No one takes an H2 offroad.

Zooksport2 05-10-2003 03:09 AM

H2 certainly is "prettier" tha the original. but who wants pretty? As for gas milage. I say the same as most other realistic persons: How can a 3 ton truck be expected to get 20 + MPG. It does have a 32 gallon tank!
I used to own a F100 with 250ci six. At best it got 15 MPG. And it weighed 1/2 as much as the hummer.

PS we are paying as much as 1 dollar (aust) per litre fo unleaded in OZ (more for 98, and even more for LRP["lead replacement petrol])

ducati999 05-10-2003 11:27 PM

The H2 is an absolute piece of utter crap, it excels AT NOTHING, its just an expensive Yukon. Now the H1's are awsome and do great offroad, the H2 would blow up if it every touched dirt, also everyone and their mother has one where i live i seriously see about 10 a day, I hate those cars, absolutely god afully ugly.

actually a g-class would have a better relation to a brick :D

Fearless_Hyena 05-11-2003 12:22 PM

i find it ironic and funny that Reuters even considered this newsworthy....what's the point??

and yes, if i had the loot i'd get an original hummer.

SilverFox 05-11-2003 09:11 PM

Anyone dumb enough to think they look cool driving a Hummer is dumb enough to complain about it's gas mileage.

Also I find the estimated 11 to 13 mpg too high. I've got as bad as 16 mpg in city driving with my Sunfire. 7 to 8 mpg sounds more reasonable to me.

I agree neither of them are stylish machines.

However, if you have any military sence... The H1 is the single most versitile machine in the governments arsenal...

Now, the major appeal, atleast to myself is that I've gone mudding in a hummer and I would love to own one, military surplus preferably, for just that purpose. However with the $100,000+ price tag that is a bit much to ask....

Now, as for the gas guzzling complainers....what do you think is going to happen when you put a gas engine into a desiel vehicle? it is going to run with a thirst... also these vehicles (military) have speedometers that only go up to 65 mph.... and this also has a reason.

</rant>

Just my .02

xMetal 05-13-2003 12:08 PM

serves the morons right. :p

Even if I was given one of those POS tax-free I would not drive it. It would be sold within a week, and a real vehicle would replace it in my garage (since, of course, the H2 wouldn't actually fit in my garage).

Ha Ha!
