White walls, phantom tops and Cadillacs. Why?

Back in the 80's and 90's this was common on Cady's. It was tacky imho but hey, they're Cadillacs. Never cared for them myself and I thought they made a decent car look ugly if not uglier.

But now Cadillac is putting out some good looking models and have finally found their niche. The average age of a Cadillac owners is dropping (my asumption from what I see) and that's a good thing. But why must I still see people ruin a good car buy putting phantom tops and white walls on a CTS's? I mean come on people. Just because it's a Cadillac must you do this?

Bad enough it took GM so long to stop putting bumper gaurds on the front bumpers

Edit: In case you don't know what I'm talking about I give you exibit A...

You should see the cars in Florida. The old farts around here will out a fake convertible top on ANYTHING. The worst examples I've seen were a new Camry, a mid-90s Chevy Lumina, and a Hyundai Elantra.

I have a buddy with a '98 Caddy with white walls and they look really good. Those tops are definitely ugly, though.

Well white walls on a Deville or Seville look good. But I saw a CTS with white walls the other day. I've also seen one or two Escalades with them also.

I have a Mercury Grand Marquis with white wall tired. I absolutley love it! It just wouldn't be the same without them.

It's all about the model of the car. White walls would look okay on a Deville or maybe even an Escalade...but not on the (fugly) CTS. Not that anything looks good on a CTS.

I hate phantom tops, but I dig whitewalls on some caddy models, that CTS was just disgusting.

On the right car, whitewalls can improve the looks. They looked great on my '93 Cougar, since it had chrome all over the place and a formal roofline. Even the vinyl half-top doesn't look too bad on those cars, but I would never put one on.

No, a phantom top is when you put convertible-looking material on a regular roof to make it look like a convertible. Fools no one. Old Fart Rice, I always called it.

I heard Ford was really going after dealers that were doing this to Lincolns, because they did not want to market their cars to such an old audience. I hope Cadillac does the same thing and goes after the dealers with their "dealer added value".

I saw a phantom top on something like a 97 ford taurus. Waste of money IMO.

That's who I blame the most. If dealers didn't make them available buyers would forget about them.

Anyone remember back in the nineties when phamtom tops were popular on lowered pick ups?

Known as vinyl roofs around here. They are a great way to hide rust or severe hail damage.
