Should I get nitrous or not?
 

Well i've been thinking about getting nitrous for my mustang. I'm running forged pistons. I was thinking about a turbo or a supercharged, but being a carburated car it doesn't seem feesable. The main reason I think I might get a nitrous kit is cause I can get a kit for really cheap and I can get my bottle refilled for cheap too. The kit I would probably get would be a nitrous express hitman. I would be running a fuel pressure safety switch and also a microswitch hooked up to my carburator? Any suggestions.

If your car is carburated then your going to get a much better response from the Nitrous then a fuel injected motor would. However, nothing is comparable to turbo or supercharging, plus with proper installation, either of the two will be much safer.

I heard a saying at a dragstrip a few years ago... "the juice is great, but I'd rather be blown." I don't see why supercharging would less feasible on a carb'd car than an injected one.

Vortec is now making a nice centrifical supercharger for most carb applications. Its a hell of a lot more efficent than the roots style and will allow you to "keep it under the hood"

I'm a big chicken when it comes to NOS. I'm a lot more comfortable with boost, so that's the route I'd take.

I'm also a cheapskate, and you don't ever have to pay someone to refill a turbo ;)

There are plenty of carbureted blowers out there. As long as you tune it right, you should have no problems.

Of course, in your situation, I'd be the psycho with the blower and nitrous at the same time :)

But nitrous is cheaper....

Please fellas, he's talking about a Hitman setup here, not a 500 hp fogger setup. Toss on the spray and have fun. Guys who pop motors due to nitrous use are from one of two reasons; they don't set up their fuel system properly, or they constantly keep their tune on the brink of disaster to run the best numbers.

It may be cheaper up front but then spending 30-40 dollars per bottle refill will make that cost up overtime... That and running boost, you can use it as often as you please :D

What do you want it for? Nitrous is only good for quarter-mile drag racing and stoplight grudges...it doesn't really make your car faster, it just makes it turn in lower times.

You would have to be a rich idiot to hit nitrous every time you got on a freeway onramp, every time you pulled away from an intersection, and every time you wanted to pass...but those are all the times you would feel the power from a turbo or supercharger.

Unless you are only looking to turn in lower times at the drags, I would say pass on the nitrous.

yeah, I know it's cheaper to NOS right away but like Spyder said, giggle gas is expensive. I'd rather spend a grand or so up front than 3 grand down the road.

Oh yea, E-Rams are the shit. Get one so you can put a "Powered by Bilge Blower" on the rear window.

I would go with a Turbo...they are smaller and easier to hide if you want it out of sight!

I think he meant it doesn't make your car faster unless you are on the bottle. A turbo means your car will ALWAYS be faster than stock. Nitrous means you have to pay every time you want your car to be faster than stock. It's a sucky proposition unless you're planning on dragracing it.

But what does a supercharger kit cost? A minimum of like $2000 ? A Nitrous kit is mabye $400 ? At $50 a bottle refill you would need to go through 32 bottles to come out even. Also you would get better fuel economy without the constant boost.

I would go w/ a S/C or Turbo setup myself. its constant, and w/ a turbo, you can always dial up the boost. Plus, i don't think n2o is street legal.

Depends on who set up the drag race and what the rules are.

OK, let's do that math. I get a supercharger for 2 grand. You get NOS for $400.

One of two things now happens. I have fun every time I drive because when I stomp it I get the full benefit of my upgrade, while you do not.

OR

We both have fun every time we drive by getting the full effect of our upgrades, and in about a week you've already spent $1600 on NOS and need to go back for another refill.

Who came out on top?

Maybe its just me, but I've never seen a car with a turbo that's hidden. Nitrous on the other hand, I've seen hidden so well that you can't tell its there unless you unbolt the intake manifold. If out of sight was an issue, nitrous is the winner hands down in that category.

I still can't get past the idea that it is harder to s/c a carb'ed car. Blowers have been around for a loooong time, and have been applied to far more carb'ed vehicle than FI ones.

NOS is lame. Go for boost, be it turbo or s/c. You'll be happier in the long run.
