Ignition Problems
I drive an 89 Pontiac Grand Prix, 2.8L V6, Automatic. I went to shut my car off the other day and the key turned but wouldnt shut off. I could even take the key out when it was turned to the right spot. I shut the fuel pump off to get the car to shut off. But the car wouldnt start back up. the key will turn all the way but nothing happens. I tried my spare key thinking mine was bad but same thing happened. I had to pull the battery cables to get the dash to shutoff. I need to just stop by the bank and see about a car loan, i'm tired of fucking with this car(suspension, exhaust, brakes, and now ignition all need work)
thanks for any help Kyle |
Sounds like a bad ignition switch. My 88 T-Bird's melted inside (common problem on 80s Fords, there was a recall but the updated switches are still crap) and did weird stuff like that. I'm not sure about GMs, but on most Fords, the lock cylinder turns a gear which moves a rod that actuates the switch, which is under the steering column. Took about 10 minutes to change mine and the new part cost $15.

Yeah sounds ike a messed up switch being and older gen Grand Am you should be able to find an ignition switch easily. Try taking the old one out and see if it is physically messed up and then do a continuity check with a multimeter.
