BMW 1-Series (yuck)

BMW 120i
It's not too incredibly horrible, but they really need to go back to their old style headlights.... Actually, I take that back, it's a fuckin' barf bag. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
BMW is poised to shake up the compact executive segment with the arrival of the new 1 Series. Featuring four engines, three gearboxes and rear-wheel drive, a combination not found in any of its competitors, the BMW 1 Series makes its entrance in autumn 2004 and will immediately offer a new benchmark to driving dynamics in its class. The high-performance four-cylinder petrol model is the BMW 120i with its 150bhp and 200Nm 2.0-litre Valvetronic petrol engine. The BMW 1 Series launch line-up is completed with two versions of the powerful yet frugal 2.0-litre common rail diesel engine, the 122bhp 118d and the 163bhp BMW 120d. Power is delivered to the road via a six-speed manual in 118d, 120d and 120i models, while the 116i has a five-speed manual gearbox. An optional six-speed automatic will also be offered on 120i and 120d models. Although a new car in a new premium segment, the 1 Series has the traditional BMW design trademarks – the front kidney grille, double headlamps and ‘Hofmeister kink’ on the C-pillar all feature. These punctuate a genuinely head-turning styling that ensures the new 1 Series will stand out amongst its competitors. After slipping behind the wheel and firing up the engine via a starter button, the driver will go on to enjoy BMW’s renowned 50:50 weight distribution and front engine, rear wheel drive set-up – unique in this class. Coupled with a technically elaborate aluminium front axle and five-link rear suspension, this ensures optimum handling and traction, and the most invigorating drive in the compact executive segment. A drag coefficient of just 0.29 helps the new BMW 1 Series slip through the air with maximum efficiency and the minimum of noise. Standard fit 16-inch run-flat tyres also mean the days of motorway hard shoulder tyre changes are over. Measuring just 4.23 metres long, but with a relatively long wheelbase of 2.66 metres, driving dynamics have been cleverly worked into a practical four-seater. The new 1 Series offers ample shoulder and legroom for rear passengers and, thanks to split fold rear seats that fold virtually flat, a similarly generous luggage capacity of between 330 to 1150 litres of storage space. Dynamic Stability Control, Dynamic Traction Control, Dynamic Brake Control and Electronic Differential Lock help ensure the 1 Series provides the highest standards of active safety without impacting unnecessarily on driving enjoyment. An airbag system that includes head airbags for all occupants means the new BMW 1 Series also meets the most stringent passive safety requirements.

ehh, i dont think its TOO bad, but it would be better if they found a way to get rid of the hatchback and make it a real car. Oh well, i wonder what the price will be? Its got some nice features, but im not sure i could deal with the looks.

Someone decided to mock the design of the Z4
"Hey.. the Z4 is suuuuch a hot design.. let's make it into a compact!" and someone thought the jackass was being serious.

I think this car will be a hit in europe ... now that the new Golf didn't start as well as hoped, this might be the awnser !
If the price is competive to the golf this might be a good alternative, but my preference still goes to the new A3 made by audi !

It's as if BMW and Mercedes are in some kind of heated battle to see who can do a better job of shitting all over their image.
BMW: "Look what we got this Bangle guy to do to our flagship! And if you think that's bad, wait till you see what happens when we cut him loose on the rest of the lineup! Plus, we're forcing iDrive on our customers even though it's completely pointless and everyone despises it!" M-B: "Oh yeah? Well we're going to roll out a bunch of cheap cars that look like the ones that cost half a million in order to ruin our upscale image and completely alienate all the people who wanted to buy a Benz because of the prestige. Then we're going to make them with all the quality and reliability of a 10 year old Hyundai!" ...and then people wonder why Lexus is doing so well. |

To me, this thing looks like something Daewoo would do. Some immature car maker desperate for visability, but with no actual design people. Just a monkey and a pen.

I actually like it, as far as hatches go.
I generally don't see why people hate the new bimmers (except the 7-series - the first time I was behind one my first thought was that it was a bloated saturn). I saw two 5-series parked next to each other today. One was new, and the other the previous model. The new one looked great. I always thought the old bimmers were visually boring. |

looks like a great replacement for the 318ti, and as someone else stated it's going to do well in the market that it would do well in, which is the Euro market.
have you seen those little econo boxes out there? from the Audi A2 to the MB A-class , it looks very much like a little version of the X series. It also stands to reason that they should have come out with something like this years ago.

I really think you guys are overdoing your opinions. I understand they are your opinions, but the car is not a complete disaster. BMW is trying to appeal to a market base and it just happens to not be so glamorous. If you really hate this car, then maybe you are not in the "selected base" of buyers BMW is trying to reach.
Remember, "Where there is an ugly car, there will be an equally ugly buyer". |

I don't think it's that bad, but I wouldn't drive it.

so how many of you haveactually gone up to the new BMWs and looked at them for a while oncve you do you get to see the grace and beutey (brain fart can't spell) of the cars and if you drive the new 5 series you can see the perfection in its ride
and trust me once you sit down and look at the z4 you can see its grace i know because i own one and it is great in person but i will agree that they don't look so good in a picture the styling and the way the light hits it is something that just cant be captured in a picture

RWD= good
style= not so good (looks like a Matrix) Price= probably not that bad Its better looking than a aztek, so if I had to choose between them both, I think the bmw wins. Are they planning on bringing it to the states?

How can someone say the M Coupe is an ugly car, I mean seriously it's one of the best designs for a hatch, and it has gobs of power, I mean sounds pretty good, of course I've always liked them.
