Some incentives to drive safe and wear the seatbelt (pics)
 

First a little background... my dad is a Careflight pilot in Dayton, OH (info on Careflight MVA can be found here ). He flies out of Miami Valley Hospital and will fly up to 150 miles away.

For some of the accidents he flies to the cops or firemen have extra polaroids which they give to the pilots. My dad brought several of them home a while back and I figured I'd post them here.

I'll provide as much background as I can remember for each pic.

This first one was a Honda CRX. The driver was drunk and ran a stop sign. He was struck by the dump truck you see in the background, to the right of the telephone pole. The posted speed limit on the road was 55mph for the truck. I think the guy lived.

This next one was a minivan of sorts, I don't remember any specifics. I do believe there were fatalities in this one.

These next two are particularly disturbing. The car is a Geo Storm. If I recall correctly, this is another scenario where someone failed to stop at a high speed intersection. In the second picture, note the sheet. There was at least one fatality.

A pickup, I think a GMC. The driver fell asleep and ran off the road. I do believe he lived.

This one I think is kind of funny... A semi hit a garbage truck and flipped it. My dad said the smell was terrible. No serious injuries if I remember correctly.

And for the last one, I can't really tell you anything. Its a Sierra 1500 pickup, and thats all I know.

I hope nobody is offended by me posting these pics.

I just hope they serve to remind us all that we are not only responsible for ourselves and our passengers safety, but for the safety of everyone else on the road.

edit: I'll throw in this last one too. This was a house that exploded due to a gas leak. Thankfully nobody was home when it happened. They called Careflight in just in case they found someone while sifting through the wreckage.

Those pics are very very educational, they are full out proof of what happens when you mess up just once. Amazing that some of those people lived through that stuff, someone upstairs must really care for them.

when I was little, my dad would yell in my face if I didn't put my seatbelt on. I hated him for that. Now I'm glad he did, and wished he would have reacted even harder to the absenteeism of a belt. Whenever I get in a car and don't have a seatbelt on, I feel like I am running around naked. That's a good thing.

I've been in a couple of situations where not wearing a seatbelt would have made things quite worse.

Yeah, i used to think that too until I got into a nasty accident and caused $7500 damage to my old car. Luckily I wasnt hurt at all (thanks seatbelt & airbag) but it could have been really REALLY bad.

I've calmed down my driving a LOT after that accident. Everytime I hear about my friends driving like dumbasses it always makes me cringe. It's WAY too easy to die in a car. All it takes is 1 second for everything to go from normal to really bad...

It was a 96 mystique. By my "old car" I meant my previous car. The one I was driving at the time.

oh I see now...when I get my new car I'm having them things taken out......in Canada you don't have to have them hooked up and working!

Not me. I'll never remove mine. Not after the accident I had. I would have smashed my face to bits on the wheel for sure without that thing. They make a HUGE mess when they deploy though. I like to have them in the hopes that I'll never need to use them...

but I don't want to brake my hands to peaces all over the roof of the car when the bag comes out......I will keep the passanger one in but I also want a Performance steering wheel so no room for an airbag there!

I have the same thing, it just feels awkward for me to drive without a seatbelt, like something is missing. I don't think i would even be able to do it, it would feel too weird for me to drive. I am also the same way with helmets while riding a bike. I can't ride a bike without a helmet or else it feels awkward. I am glad though as my brain would be liquid if it weren't for my helmet TWICE. I think the HEADSTRONG (not sure if it was called that, but its close) came into our grade school with a professional biker who never wore a helmet because he thought he was too good for one but then ended up falling and cracking his head open on a sidewalk and is now mentally retarded for the rest of his life.

I never had my dad yell in my face, mostly because he never really wears his belt much, but I have just always put it on when I get into a car;)

Hey pain train, if your hands are where they are supposed to be, then the airbag will not break your arms. If you have one hand on top of the wheel, then yes, you might have problems. As for me, I will take the chance of a broken hand over my DEATH or mangled Face in the steering wheel any day. Good luck to you. I hope your driving is better than your thinking. I also hope that everyone else around you is an excellent driver.

I can't think of any good reason to remove an airbag.
