First year in the US

I just bought one of these for my son. He picked it out, however, I know virtually nothing about the car. I do know that it is rally bred and having driven it, I can tell you it's got tons of power. I'm really curious about maintenance issues and the like, so if anyone has any experience, please reply.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII

If im not mistaken, that car has a problem with rust forming behind the rear bumper. Don't take my word for this though, as i don't remember exactly. Do a search here.

Yeah, there are rust problems, and you bought him that car. That lucky guy. My dad "helped" me by finding me a 82 reliant for 500 bucks. -_- Sweet car though.

Only other issues might be having tooo much fun

I hope your son is as interested in learning about the car as you are. I would look for a good evo forum, and point him towards it. If he doesn't appreciate it, ill be glad to take it off your hands

Thanks for all the positive feedback, I will definitely look into the rust issue. FYI---although I did technically buy the car, he is repaying the loan and pays for his own insurance. You don't even want to know how much his bill is.

well the evo had a jump start but the cobra won at the end. but those little evos have good traction and are pretty fast the first 60 feet.

Does the Cobra not have 390HP to the Evo's 271HP, I should hope the Cobra wins, but I love that EVO.

Thank you, that was very kind. A side note---after I had driven it for the first time, all I could say to him was to be careful, careful, careful...I must have said it a dozen times. Damn thing has alot of power for a 4 banger.

hehehe don't listen to the guy comparing it to a Cobra you have the much better car, AWD and it's rally inspired, no offense to the SVT, even though I love the SVT why put it up against an EVO 80HP difference is quite a bit.

I'm still avaliabe if you are in the market for a son I have a 96 2.5RS with the 22B engine in it but I would be more than willing to get an STI. Just kidding good choice telling your son to be careful, 271HP in a little car like that wow.

Not to be mean or rude or anything like that, but there is a good chance your son will be killed in a car like that. With the shit that I did when I got my first car (My dad "helped" me get a 1986 Oldsmobile), I should be dead right now. If I got a damn EVO, I WOULD be dead. He will wreck it, he will get a ticket, he will do stupid stuff in it, he will go 120 MPH + in it. Be prepared.

I was an honors student with a 4.1 GPA in high school. How good you think your son is doesn't matter. Power of an engine runs through the veins of most guys.

Thank you for your concern, however, there is no need to be crass. The decision to buy this car was not taken lightly. I am fully aware of the effects of testosterone fueled motoring and physics.

I understand. It's good that you aren't like a lot of parents are just go and buy their kids a car on a whim. Putting thought into it is a good thing.

Every single one of my friends who got a new car wrecked them within the first year of having it. Some totaled. I'm just trying to bring this to your attention. It's not a pretty sight.

I hope you and your son stay safe

FYI---I didn't mention that my son is 22 years old. He is still pretty young, however, he's not totally gonzo like he was when he was 16. When he was that age, he was driving a manual 4 speed Isuzu pickup with all of 90hp. Also, in an attempt to satisfy the need to drive the EVO as it is designed, the two of us are going to get our track rating and go down to the local raceway every once in awhile.

Thanks for everyone's concern, I appreciate it.

The only thing I can tell you about the Mitsubishi Turbo motor is that you have to buy an aftermarket turbo timer, and this is why; When you drive a turbo car, your oil runs through your turbo and gets extremely hot, now lets say your out speeding and decide to come home and turn your car right off, all of that oil stays in your turbo, cools down, gets caked to the inside of your turbo, and no new cool oil gets through. THIS IS NOT GOOD. A turbo timer allows you to set (or sets for you) how long you want your car to run for after you turn the car off, allowing fresh oil to keep you turbo running stronger, longer. A must for all turbos.
