I was bored and decided to take this pic
Alpine headunit-9807, Alpine speakers-SPS 170, Alpine Subs- SWR-1241, Hifonics Brutus BX1000d amp.

All that for only 855 shipped!!
This weekend im finally going to start on the box because i couldnt really start it without having the amp to get correct measurements. also Prelude trunks are small so thats why i had to wait to place everything were i wanted. Hopefully i should have everything done by the end of the month, my fingers are crossed. so far my headunit and speakers are good but i cant say nething about my subs and amp yet, ill tell you guys as soon as i get everything wired up!

I don't have anything major, but I like my Pioneer '7300 head unit, and have Infinity Reference 5.25" compnents in the front doors, and Infinity Reference 6x9 3-ways in the rear deck. They NEED an amp...just need to find the money.

Depends on what you want it to do. Sealed boxes are less efficient, meaning they require more power for the same output. Sealed boxes dig deeper, but often take much power to do so. Ported boxes can give as much as a 3 dB increase at the tuning frequency, but have sharp rolloffs below that point. A poorly designed ported box can actually damage woofers if abused. When a woofer plays below the tuned frequency of the box, it decouples from the enclosure. The sub is basically running in free-air. The suspension of the sub has no control over the movement of the cone. This can lead to over excursion and damage the woofer. Ported boxes can be a bit boomy at or very close to the tuning frequency. A well tuned and constructed ported box can give very pleasing sound quality, though. My slot ported box for my 12W7's, tuned at 37Hz, fucking killed at the metal music I listen to. It was also very musical.

My first box for my 12W7's was slot ported. I ran with that for about 6 months before I decided to go sealed. I prefer sealed boxes because the excursion of the woofer is never out of control, even at the deepest of lows.

Yeah I know that is a totaly cheap ass set up and definatly not quality. I did that for a reason. I know sound and I know quality, BUT I did this as a total budget experment. What was I shooting for? Well I wanted a cheap system that sounded good in a convertable (that used to be a hard top) and could be heard over the open exhaust. Well I did acomplish the goal. The only problem is that when I make the car bounce the cd player skips, but then any shock hard enough to crack a tranny open will skip anything.

Oh yeah, and props to the Midwest!

No one box is necessarily better than the other. It comes down to the desired result. If you want big bass with not a lot of power, then go ported and rock out. If you want cleaner, deeper, more controlled bass and have the budget to throw a shitload of power at your woofers, go sealed. I ran my 12W7's at 1000 watts each in my sealed box. Loved it, would not want to go back to ported (and haven't so far).

Well this summer I'm hopeing to get a new car, and I guess subs always sound better in cars. But my JL's are old and not very powerfull, but I should have bought the 800 or 900 watt Rockford Fosgate, not the 231!

But this summer I would like to get some nice powerfull RF's and get a huge amp

I have a Sony Xplod head unit, Sony Xplod 6" and 6x9s, 2 soundstream 12s, and a Soundstream Rubicon 550 amp. Way more bass than I need.

The amp has so many adjustments, you need to be a sound engineer to tune it

Dude, FYI... I'd stay away from Rockford anymore. They are now a publicly traded company, the products haven't been the same since. Do you think a rich stockholder in his 60's really cares about making a better product for the kid in the car next to him with the windows down and the bass blasting?

No stereo in my racecar, no stereo in my Firebird, stereo in my RX7 is a competition only setup that we swap in and out. Clarion head unit on a stand just for the burps, 1 or 2 American Bass VFL 15's depending on the class, and the amps also depend on the setup, anywhere from American Bass XD's to US Amps 1000's, etc etc.

I love JL. They have awesome products at many different price points. Check out some W0's for a budget system, W3's for much more performance for about double the money, W6's for very good SQ, and if you're feeling like going all out, balls to the wall.... W7's (but be prepared to spend copious amouts of green on amps). My personal recommendation at the moment would be the Type R subs from Alpine. Granted, they don't have the super esoteric SQ of a W7, and can't get as loud (I don't care about SPL, but its a concern for some), but you don't need a bazillion watts to get the true SQ abilities out of them. You can almost get 4 Type R 12's for the price of 1 12W7. I have had my Type R 12's for about 9 months now, and I am quite pleased. I'd say go for some Type R's, throw about 500 watts at each of em.... and you'll be titilated.

Pioneer 220 (55x4) watt CD player deck
Stock speakers in front and back
Kenwood 800 watt peak power (200x2 watt RMS) 2 channel sub-amp
2 12" 600 watt peak power (200 watt RMS at 4 ohms) Pioneer Subs in a sealed box

Upgrading in the next few weeks to:

Same Pioneer deck
New panasonic 240 watt, 4-ohm 6x9s in the back
Leaving the 5.25" in the front alone - they sound great as is
Replacing the two 12" Pioneers with two 12" Volfenhag Dual Voice Coil, 2-ohm 1000 watt max (500 RMS) subs
Adding another Kenwood amp so that each Sub has it's own dedicated amp (all in all pumping out 920 watts RMS, 1600 watts peak power).

Brandon, just one question if you don't mind...I agree with you on JLs quality, but why are you all Alpine now?

I recently finished a custom install for my friend's Extended Cab Tacoma.

Kenwood Excelon KDC-X759 - Deck
Kenwood Excelon KHD-CX910 - Keg
Eclipse EA3532 - Amp
Diamond Audio Hex Series S600s - Front Speakers
Diamond Audio Motorsport M6 Series M661 - Rear Speakers
Diamond Audio CM3 08D2 - Sub

He wanted a stealth install, and other than the deck, you can't tell that he has anything aftermarket in his truck. The sub is sealed and built into the rear seat. I was a little worried that 120w wouldn't be enough to throw at the sub (I couldn't keep the install stealthy with 2 amps), but the speaker is so efficient it sounds great. Diamond is a bit more expensive than JL but the difference is night and day if you can find a shop in your area to listen to them, I highly recommend you take the time to do so.

I had a 230 Watt Rockford Fosgate running my 2 JL's which wasn't enough so I bought a 600 Watt Rockford Fosgate and now they pound...I believe my JL's are old W3's.

Question: I'm thinking about 2 10s or 12s for the back of my SHO. What kind of amp would I need to get for just the subs? The front speakers are already powered, I just want some bass. If I'm gonna have 2 subs, would i need a 2 channel amp or just a single channel going to the box and both of the subs wired to the box?

Wraith - either will do. With a two channel, depending on the subs (are you thinking 2, 4 or 8 ohm impedence?), you're may or may not end up getting more power per channel than just a straight 1-channel (or a bridged 2-channel, for that matter). Or, you could do what I'm doing - one dedicated bridged amp per sub!

What would be a decent stereo that I could fit in an extended cab Tacoma that would go well with Punk-ish music. I'd be looking to spend a couple hundred I suppose and I know nothing about car stereos. Also, I'd like to be able to transfer the majority of a stereo system to a new car, that's possible, right?

Just get a after market deck, they will fit into any car, if you got the right wire harness. I'm not into punk music but i have played Blink 182 on my 2 10 inch JL's and well even one 12 or even 15 would sound good enough with punk, just make sure its more the 200watts, but with you go for something like 600watts you will be spending more the say 300 dollars. Unless you get a cheap deck like mine, I got a 150 dollar Kenwood deck(on sale) maybe thats why its doesn't work anymore

I got my whole system for around 580 dollars(CDN) and thats buying stuff off of friends and co-workers
