Couple of automotive questions I need answering....
Well most of you probably have seen my project 84' mustang gt
http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/showthr...threadid=26985 I have a few questions that I need answering to help me on my questions No.1 Proper Break in procedure. I plan on priming the oil system with a drill. If I use assembly lube on everything do I have to worry about the old trick about priming the oil pump with a light grease? Then I was wondering what should I start the car idling at and how long till my absolute first oil change and then how long till I change it again. No.2 Camshaft selection I need a non roller hydraulic camshafter for a 351W/5.0 H.O engine. I want something that gives me power from about 1500rpm+, has an ok idle yet I would still be able to run my power brakes. I was thinking about a Edelbrock performer cam but I want to know what else is there out ther for options?

re: the oil pump
The light grease as a primer is good insurance and harms nothing. I would hate to have to drain the oil and drop the pan because I got no oil flow. What oil are you using for break in? First oil change @ 300 miles. Change it again @ 1000. Idle speed may well depend on yur final choice of cam. Have fun!!

Make sure you research break in procedures with moly rings. They are very hard to get a good seal. I'm not sure of the procedure without looking it up. A book called "How to rebuild smallblock Fords" is a great tool. I have the one for the 335 and 385 engine series(335 = 351C,351M/400, 385 = 429/460). There are a bunch of cams available. Make sure you choose the cam, lifters, push rods and springs and rocker arms as a set. Crane, competition cams and Ford SVO have all of these. Check out some 5.0 Mustang magazines or Fast Fords and Mustangs magazines. They may have web sites also. Think about going thru the tranny and checking the syncronisers and bearings. All of the new horsepower may break the old tranny. If it has the 8.8 rear end you can find all kinds of gear choices. With almost 5oohp on the bottle you will want subframe connectors also.
