Stare At The Sun 11-07-2003 06:17 AM

I have no idea, but that kicks ass. I want one.

supafly 11-07-2003 06:52 AM

Looks great, but i don't know.

peacy 11-07-2003 08:41 AM

According to my estimates (based on the fact that the engine block can hold a wine bottle) we're looking for a V8 displacing ~4 litres with 90°.
If we could see the crankshaft we could narrow down the search (flat-plane or cross-plane).

Peryn 11-07-2003 10:10 AM

my guess would be a ford 5.0 maybe. With pistons that size, my guess is its more than 4L, unless its got a really short stroke. Prolly just a 350 or 302....doubt its any really special block.

reconmike 11-07-2003 11:06 AM

where the timing cover bolts it is not a SBC, it looks like a small block ford

drawerfixer 11-07-2003 11:25 AM

That is completely kickass. I would pay out the ass for something that cool.

Spyder_Venom 11-07-2003 12:40 PM

I would say an old osmobile, it has the W shaped bell housing unlike the Ford and the SBC which have a point at the top. The only V8s that I know that have that are the Pontiacs and the olds but its not a SBP motor, those have a flat intake manifold galley.

Snakebyt 11-07-2003 01:34 PM

thats cool, but would be a bitch to move, blocks are heavy.. maybe i should try that, i think we have 3 or 4 blocks laying around the shop

Moonduck 11-07-2003 06:17 PM

Cool as hell. I want one. Gotta find me a cheap block.

FastShark85 11-07-2003 07:20 PM

Looks like an older design...there aren't channels in there for coolant flow right next to the cylinders.

telekinetic2 11-07-2003 07:27 PM

I love that the crank sprocket to drive the cam is just hanging in the chain...

Sion 11-07-2003 11:16 PM

note for those trying to determine what engine this is. I'd bet that its an aluminum block. that should narrow the choices down quite a bit.

grumpyolddude 11-08-2003 06:28 AM

The block looks like an old Buick 215. Could be a Land Rover block. They bought the plans for the 215 from GM and have been making aluminum copies for a few years.

irseg 11-08-2003 09:59 AM

That is too cool. Antique radios and cars are hobbies of mine. And I like my alcohol too. I'd be proud to have that room in my house. :)

That was the thinking on another board that I frequent (I posted the pic to see what they had to say). Here's a link that shows the motor you speak of:

grumpyolddude 11-08-2003 12:40 PM

Excellent link, onetime.

Check the profile on the conn. rod and the depth of the piston skirt. Uniquely Buick!

GM should never have quit on this engine. The big cube pony cars drove it out of business, but it was perfect for the Special and Skylark.

Look at the flat plane of the bass. Unmistakeable.

ireallydontknow 11-08-2003 03:35 PM

i want one of those

merkerguitars 11-11-2003 08:32 PM

I wonder how hard it would be to find one of those engine blocks in a junkyard....if not i wonder where i can find a different type of v8 aluminum block

Sion 11-12-2003 04:59 AM

merk, the 4.1 liter V8 that was used in many Cadillacs (and some other gm cars I believe) in the 80s shouldnt be hard to find. they made tons of em.

Scorps 11-12-2003 09:44 AM

Humm I got a old cast-iron block in my garage but that might be to heavy for the floor...LOL

grumpyolddude 11-13-2003 09:34 AM

Merk, you might check with any local engine rebuilders in your area. If they don't have any scrap engines on hand, they'll know the best places to look. Have fun, post a pic of the results!

Ahh yes, the HT4100. Only engine in recent history I can think of that's even worse than the Ford 3.8 V6. You know it's bad when it comes with stop-leak in the coolant from the factory in a halfassed attempt to stop internal leaks from corroding the bearings. It would definitely serve much better as a coffee table.

harris Jeffer 11-28-2003 09:15 AM

it looks like a 5 liter Porsche 928 engine circa 1986

catback 11-28-2003 06:51 PM

That table has some nice displacement :)

Ilow 12-02-2003 08:42 PM

that's an awesome piece of art, but shouldn't they be stowing the wine upside down so the corks don't dry out? PS, the alum. block LR theory seems plausible.

Dude, the 928 was always a V8. I don't think Porsche even made a I-6.

As for the coffee table, it's a what is now known as a Rover V8. The design was bought from GM in the 60's and has been in Rover 3500's, Triumph Stag's, TR8's, MGB GT V8's, TVR's, Land Rover's, Range Rover's, and lots of small manufatures like Marcos and Morgan.

Sion 12-04-2003 10:32 AM

1986 Porsche 928 came with a 4.7l OHV V8.

This dovetails nicely with my observations. I'd like to see some pics of that Porsche V8 for comparison purposes, tho.

herostar 12-08-2003 02:18 PM

that is tooo cool, I wonder how hard it'd be to make that...?

the 4.1L is definitely one of the worst engines ever made. right up there with the diesel 350s and the V-4-6-8.

MrGone 12-09-2003 03:46 AM

I forgot which make, but I know its a big block. its certianly not a small block ford.

grumpyolddude 12-09-2003 10:46 PM

Hey, Sion, do you have an answer, or is this just your way of keeping us mouth-breathers in suspense?

jwoody 12-10-2003 08:26 AM

I don't know a fuckin' thing about engines, but I know a cool-as-fuck coffee table when I see one.

Sion 12-10-2003 09:41 PM

from the link in Mr Mephisto's Weird car thread, this page identifies the engine as a Rover V8
