They must have cut back on frame material in order to save weight.

If I had to guess, it wasn't that they cut back on material to save weight, it was probably metal fatigue, stress cracks, etc.

It looks like it was caused by excessive rear wheel traction!

Car wants to wheelie, frame doesn't want to respond quickly enough, car breaks itself in half

dammit.
that would be so frightening sitting in that little cockpit when your ridiculously fast vehicle splits in half.
would have been worth the price of admission though to see that... (was that a little insensitive??)

A wreck. The driver probably walked out with no major issues. Probably.

My guess is that the driver was fine. He is on the fron half. I bet that half just went skidding to the end of the track, while the engine and wheels went spinning and flipping around causing destruction to everything behind him. Hes probably fine, minus the skidmarks he left in his clothes...

Events like that are precisely why drag racers stopped using Slingshot rails. With the driver placed in front of the engine, instead of behind it like on the old rails, you tend to leave much of the carnage behind by simple virtue of speed and position. You also have MAJOR scattershields between your backside and the engine.

Peryn's right though, bet he had to have his firesuit steam-cleaned.
