just reviving an old thread here :)
there´s been a lot of talk about cars especially with the oil price through the roof so i´m wondering what people in this forum drive. i looked back through the last 11 pages and recognised not a single person and in any case 99% of the photos are no longer there. but without further ado: the volvo 850 that is sitting outside at the moment. http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g1...s/IMGP3543.jpg the volvo 1800e i own back in au http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g1...s/IMGP2988.jpg the volvo 122s that i own back in au that was my daily driver until i left. http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g1...s/IMGP2985.jpg |

I'm especially jealous of the 1800e. |

Quote:
the 122 has been the most fun of all the volvos i´ve owned as it just feels like you throw it around rather than drive it. the 1800 is the car i´ve owned the longest (10 years this year) and has taken all that time and a significant amount of money and way more time (i did all the work on it myself including taking the gearbox out 4 times to fix a leaking seal :orly: ) to get right. i think ssomeone has played with the engine as it´s a bit hard to drive but goes way faster than it should :) oh and it´s survived a kangaroo to boot... thinking about it, i already own my dream car although it´s not puctured. it´s a ´74 volvo 164 and for some reason i just really like that model. i guess taste is a personal thing. I drive a £300 '94 Ford Fiesta 1.1. Dark green, no hubcaps (stylish ;))
Thinking about painting the steelies bright orange :surprised: Super slow, super cheap, student car. What are you paying for fuel as a comparison? I think its a bit over £1/litre for 95, or £1.10+ for 98-100RON |
98 - 100 RON (~ 95 PON) is just a tad higher octane than our "premium" unleaded pump gas which runs 93 - 94 PON except in California where they serve 91 PON-piss and charge a lot more for it.
This past weekend I paid $3.80/gal for 93 unleaded premium pump gas for one of our cars, then $3.69/gal for regular unleaded 87 octane for our other car; I also paid $8.25/gal for 112 octane leaded gas for my car above, and burned up too much of it having fun so I'm going out at lunch today and getting 10 more gallons. Don't forget this is U.S. gallons not Imperial gallons. |

Well, here's my hoopty-ass Wrangler when I got it in March of 06:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2335/...656b86b8_o.jpg And here's a couple of pictures from this past weekend, right before the top came off for the year: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2316/...a7f0002a_o.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2225/...8e44b1ba_o.jpg I haven't done nearly as much as I'd like to with it yet. And even though it's a useless little 4 cyl. automatic right now, I don't mind it staying that way for a while - mainly because of gas prices. On 12 gallons (93 octane), I can get about 200 miles. That's a hell of a lot better than my (32-gallon tank!) Bronco was that I had before this. And it's not like I'm heading to Moab anytime soon... I swear to God though, if I get deployed one more time, I am going to drop an LS1 or a 351 Cleveland in that fucker - just because it can be done. I never want a big flashy, high-speed sports car. But I'm alllll about putting some heat into something that won't draw anyone's attention. |

It's a 95 NSX, which means 3 liter, 270 hp V6. I'm stock except for intake/headers/exhaust. I'm not much of a racer, I just like to drive and especially I like to go around corners at speed. I  2nd gear. :) Where are you at? We get over that way several times a year and might hook up for coffee/beer/etc. Ya never know. |

2001 Ford Focus Wagon in the "Street Edition" trim.
We bought it new in 02 and it's served us very well over the years. Here's a picture from Skagway Alaska. This was half-way through a Cross-Canada roadtrip that took us over 13,000 kilometers. We went from Toronto west to BC, up the coast on the Alaskan Ferry, over to Whitehorse, and then south through Alberta to Yellowstone and finally back through the states to home. It was a great trip. http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...ar_Skagway.jpg |

I'm a big Lotus fan, those cars are great ...light and responsive. I'm looking at the Lotus 2-Eleven as a potential dedicated track-only car I can drive at occasional trackdays I attend so I don't beat up my other car. Here's the new 2-Eleven...over 250hp under 1500lbs. http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...even014-sm.jpg |

don't know if you get many in the states but you should have a look at the ariel atom too if you are just looking for a track car. |
Ariel Atom is a great and very capable track car. But somehow it's ...too abstract for me. The 2-Eleven LOOKS like a car. Plus I'm old enough to remember the original Lotus Eleven's racing around, so the new one soothes my aging psyche.
|
I could never buy an Ariel Atom because I would never feel right paying $40 000 or more for what amounts to an engine from a Honda Civic and a bit of scaffolding.
But that's just me. |

The new DD. Has 169 miles on it as of right now. Compared to the other 3 door hatchbacks in its price range, I don't regret my purchase in the least. Just did a very clean Sirius install in the car yesterday as well.

That's a handsome interior. No 5 sped, though? No clutch for Skutch?
|
Of course it's very different than the classic old school SS Chevelle mold, but that sure does look like a well designed and appointed/detailed car. Nice.
|
Right, it is no musclecar to be sure. It is a V6 after all, with a 6 speed automatic (no clutch for Skutch Willravel ;)). It's a cruiser not a racer, and while the steering is direct, there is a lot of body roll. The quietest cockpit I've driven in. The engine (and starter motor) is barely audible upon startup, and you cannot hear ordinary traffic noises around you.
|
You can hear police and fire truck sirens, though, right? :expressionless:

Cool, I like some of the Mustangs, especially a couple of the old classics. A guy I work with owns not one but two '68 428 CobraJet Mustangs, one hardtop and one convertible; they also have other valuable options like "drag pack" etc.; both have been in the family since new, the second one belonged to his dad who eventually aged to the point he was worried driving it so he gave it to the son.
|
Nick the Mach 1 was my Dad's and he gave it to me and I had it restored I still have the numbers matching engine for it. I replaced it with a newer 460 that is pretty hopped up about 1000hp at the rear wheels I like it better than the new one but the newer one has all of the moderen convenices in it.

Will it is a summit engine but it does have aluminum block and heads just like the edelbrock. I went with summit because they offer teflon coated pistons and vaulve guides and heavier vaulve springs. You get a little more life out of it that way to.:)
|
Very smart. The Edelbrock engine is really popular, so I figured I'd venture a guess. Still, stock those are only in the neighborhood of 500 hp. You must have had a field day with it.
|
The 351 that was in it was still pretty strong when I got it but it had 150,000 miles on it so she was pretty warn. I have since had it rebuilt and have it sitting on a engine stand in the garage. I had it bored .30 over pop up pistons roller vaulves hot cam. I used the orginal 650cfm holley card and had it rebuilt also. I havent had it dynoed yet but it is probably 700hp or so. The only reason I haven't put it back in is it likes 107 octane and it isn't cheap or avalible every where. It is alot of fun with the summitt engine in it plus it will run off of 92 or 97 octane

Yeah my Malibu has the manumatic or whatever you want to call it, with paddleshifters behind the wheel, but I'll never use it. I don't need to be hearing a garden variety GM V6 4-door family sedan revving to 5500rpm do I? I've had cars with this feature (that weren't Ferraris) and I don't see the point. It's like putting racing stripes on a Yugo, you know? Nice Mustangs...my friend had an '84 2.3L Intercooled Mustang SVO...175 big ones! Eh...it sounded cool anyway. cj22009, do you have the option to change the dashboard lighting color in your GT500? I love that feature, every car should have that, hehe. |

That van wins!! Amazing job on it, how much did that set you guys back?
http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/2...ost355mbe2.jpg Current vehicle. Its a work vehicle, I got rid of mine cause I can use this for the small amount of personal driving that I do. And Badnick, I want a 94 supra in a bad way. I love them with the stockish body (aka. not riced out) |
Our drummer works for a company that makes the body wraps, among other things. They get printed in overlapping panels on gigantic bumper sticker material. We're still waiting to be invoiced, but we're told that this work, installed, would run over $3,000 USD to the general public.
Took @ 18 hours to prep and wrap the van in the drummer's driveway. He did an awesome job! Now, I'm going to start saving for some nicer wheels. Those stock steel wheels now look rather shabby. Budgets getting tight, though. |
You know grumpy, I never even noticed the wheels. That paint is so bad assed. With rims though that thing will really pop, I seriously dig it.
|
grumpy, you guys look really Beatles in the pictures on the van. But it's an awesome job.
I need a van like that. I think I need a band first. |
Quote:
Actually, those are the front and back of the jacket on the single that we released a few month back.... to absolutely no fanfare at all! I think we've sold a few dozen, gave away a few hundred. A van is easier to find than a couple of dedicated, like-minded bandmates. Good luck! And blahblah, I'm thinking of simply painting the wheels flat black until the finances recover and I can get some purty, shiny ones. |
It's just odd. Because you don't really sound Beatles, from what I remember.
And yeah, finding bandmates is a trick. I keep thinking I ought to move to the city, but I haven't quite worked up the nerve to take the plunge yet. |

BadNick, more on your Supra!
|
blahblah454,
thanks for asking, bud. But wow!, I have to admit I'm almost obsessed with it so I try not to go so far as to bore others talking about it too much. Hey, a related fact is that I'll be driving my Supra at New Jersey Motorsports Park at a track day on Aug. 5th. Too bad you're not close or you could come watch for free, cruise around the pits, etc...could be fun for a car guy. NJMP is a new track with a couple nice roadcourses that they just built in South Jersey near Millville. This will be my first time driving on it...actually very few people have driven on it so far. I'll be driving on the Thunderbolt track, which is 2.25 miles per lap with a 1/2 mile long straightaway...so I'll be hitting pretty high speeds by the end of that ....hope I don't die. NJMP Track Information If I can get my lazy ass organized, I'll mount my camera in the car and get some incar vids of a few laps...I'll post here of course if I get that. I'll at least have a bunch of still shots and hopefully an interesting report of the day. I'm not sure if I have any good pics that I haven't posted already. I really don't take a lot of pics of it unless something new happens, then I take a couple shots and move on. But there's a car forum where I post that only allowed one picture of your car in the "members rides" section so I made this composite to comply with that rule. I've posted some of these shots before, but here's that composite, a couple of me driving at Pocono, one at Watkins Glen, one on top of the Philadelphia Art Museum steps overlooking the skyline, one inside our shop at work where I stored it for a bit over the winter, and one outside the body shop where I had a couple minor things cleaned up. http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...rcollage-1.jpg |
Do you have an in-car cam you plan on using?
|
QM,
I plan on using my Nikon Coolpix 7900. It's mainly a still digi cam, but it can take enough video to record an entire run session at 640X480 pixels and 30 fps video mode and it has electronic vibration reduction and sound recording. I haven't used it for incar yet, but I think it should be OK. I also don't have a cool camera mount yet, but I can use the little single foot camera stand I have and bungee and duct tape it to my passenger side headrest. |
About camera mounts, I bought one of these.
ChaseCam, Your Source for Video at Speed the SM31 Camcorder Window Mount, about half-way down the page It works extremely well. I am confident enough in it that I've stuck it to my roof, trunk lid, back window, etc at speeds up to 100 mph and I think it'd be good for quite a bit more. And of course it also works well inside the car. |
thanks for the advice, bp, that looks pretty good. In fact, it looks so good I may just buy it tomorrow....not that I'm procrastinating, just a final mental review.
|
I am now the proud owner of an S31 camera mount. Thanks, bp.

Me and my camera mount in action.
http://sarasotadetail.com/gallery2/d.../IMG_2095a.jpg The only thing wrong is the audio is 100% wind noise. The little digital cameras take really good video, but without a remote microphone, it's not as nice as I'd like. I'm giving thought to one of those lipstick cameras with a separate mic. |
I've heard the wind noise problems you're talking about....I wonder if I tape a small hunk of foam rubber right over the mic pickup area on the camera, if that might reduce wind noise...that kind of thing works on big separate microphones.
I'll just update with my ...update: I got the mount today, looks very nice. Thanks, bp. I want to set it up and take a spin to see how it works and to coordinate my button pushing to turn the camera on/off. I think I'm going to slice up one of those hearing protector foam plugs...since that foam density seems to work well to suppress high pitched loud noises (wind?) but still allow transmission of softer sounds and voices...like when I'm humming a sweet lullaby as I drive as fast as I can around the track; so I figure to start with a 1/4" thick slice of that stuff covering up the mic holes on the front of my little digi cam...I thought that I don't want to put a layer of adhesive between the sound holes and the bottom of the foam, so I'll just put a mild glue around the edges. I'll report back. |

LS, good luck with your Saab...it looks real nice.
I had a 9000 turbo a few years ago, it was quite peppy, handled very well in a sporty sort of way...did everything quite well actually; and it had a LOT of room to carry stuff when I folded the rear seats down. |
