My vehcile bit the big one.
Okay, I know, it WOULD be nice if I could spell vehicle.
My trusty '92 GMC Suburban has a pretty much dead engine. The dealer wants $5,000 to put in a rebuilt engine. The rest of the vehicle is in pretty good shape, but, I'm worried that the tranny and/or front and rear diffs. may go next. The windshield does have a crack in it and the mileage is at 163,000. If I were to replace it, I'm looking at the Saturn VUE or Jeep Wrangler. Any thoughts or ideas? |
Stay with GM

Out of the two choices, I'd go for the Saturn VUE with a CVT.

Don't goto the dealer... You can get a mild 350 rebuild motor for 1,500 and get it R&R'ed (uninstall the old one, install the new one) for about a grand.
Dealers are a rip off LOL |
Yeah, build a 355 or a 383 stroker for it, for half the money, and you'll be good to go.
|
www.jasperengines.com a 350 shortblock is about $1300.......the website can help you find an installer for cheaper.....dealers screw people over bigtime over new engines.
|
As others said, avoid the dealer. EIther get it done elsewhere or go with the new car. Saturn will probably last longer than the Jeep.

I would advise getting a rebuilt motor at the local parts store like Autozone or Advance Auto and having a local mechanic do the work I just hed a rebuilt 302 put in a Ford f-100 pickup the motor was 1500.00 and the wrok cost $250.00 if you decide to go with a new or newer vehicle., I would advise the Jeep Wrangler I have a 92 and would not trade it for anything it is the best vehicle I have ever owned.

Thanks for the advice. The wife and I decided to go with a used vehicle. We bought a '98 Chevy Tahoe, with 40K miles on it for about 16K. Very nice condition. The Vue was out of our price range and she didn't want to get a Jeep to replace the Suburban. I'm gonna let her keep the Tahoe and I'll drive her Carvan till the damn trans. finally gives up the ghost. Then, I'll purchase a Jeep for me. Thanks again for all the advice.
