VW Mk4 Jetta/Golf (If you can find one for that, have to be close to that range though, not 100% sure) Personally, 6-7k. Saturns are pretty inexpensive to buy used, Neons. I'd try to find a Subie or a Toyota though, they run for freaking ever! |

Volvo. Any model you can find with under 150,000 miles. Sure to get you at least another 100k with nothing more then routine maintenance.
In the 6-7k range an earlier 90s 900 series sedan or wagon is easily within that range. I can not think of a model even available with a manual (since 1989 or pre 2000)...nor one that I would try and disuade you from purchasing. -bear
