Female/Male Cars
Lately, when discussing cars, I hear people mumble something like, "Can't get that, it's a female car." I think associating gender with a car is ridiculous. Assocating color is fine...but the car.
I've heard it the most with the Jetta. Comments?

i generally think small compact, standard Civics, Neons, Lancars, jetta are chick cars. Does that mean i wouldn't buy one if the price was right? hells no, well maybe if it was pink.
You can't go wrong with a truck if you are a guy, unless it was that Aztec in that other thread.

The Mazda Miata was and is very popular with women. I've read this, and the few people I've know who owned one were women, _and_ most of the Miatas I've seen on the road are driven by women. But that wouldn't stop me from buying one if I actually liked it.
A lot of the cars I'm seeing listed here as women's cars -- Volvos, Jettas, Civics, Neons -- are actually college student cars. I live in a college town, and there are hordes of these things around. What they are, mostly, is small and inexpensive and not very powerful (excepting the Volvo). So if you associate your manhood with large size and big horsepower, you might consider them girlie cars. But then I would question your judgement about what makes a man, a man. |

H1 = Total guys car. H2 = chick car
Just one example, but there are several cars you can pull up behind and know there is a woman driving it. Then they start driving and you know for sure

Actually, theres a Volvo station wagon around campus that looks bad as hell. It's a orange-gold T5 with a really subtle, factory equipped aero package. Beautiful car.

Chick cars are for the girls that would rather look "cute" than drive something practicle.
Typically the only cars I look at as girl cars are the Beetl, the Cabrio, and the H2 (soccer moms only). Civics and Jettas can go either way. Just a side note - in highschool, my gym teacher had a red beetle. We all made fun of him for having such a feminine care (he's about 6'8 - huge scarey football player-type gym teacher). Well, to make it worse, the next year he got a rust colored Cabrio. Tell me he wasn't hiding something.

Oftentimes, manufacturers don't go out of their way to design a car for one sex. Why would they cut out half of the market? But, sometimes groups perceive a car as "theirs". Look at Subarus. Subaru does advertise in gay mags and they have used Martina Navatrilova as a spokesperson. Many lesbians like Subarus because they are perceived as being a little aggresive and outdoorsy without being ecologically insensitive suv's. Of course, look how many guys like myself have bought the WRX.

I think that if you're making this decision you've got bigger problems than car envy--i.e. penis envy. Just get a good car that's safe and doesn't pollute too much and you're a big man in my book anyday.

i wouldn't put minivans into teh chick car category. They are becoming more and more popular with the dads that deal with kids a lot. I See minivans as a parent's car....not a chick car. Especially since they almost all have 200hp these days, 240 on the honda. Very few chick, or moms, know how to use that much power.

I knew one that could handle that power. But when I rebuild my Van(full-size). I hope to grab about 350 or maybe 400 HP out of my 350. |

at my school, pretty much only sorority girls drove eclipses, ya know, with those mardi gras beads on the rear view mirror and fuzzy steering wheel cover things. 2003 impala??? it's pretty neutral i think, but i've only seen guys driving it so far.

Obviously the new bugs, but i've also heard MR2s being described as feminine.
As for volvo station wagons... I had an '85 classic blue one, and it was completely awesome, not a chick's car at all, unless you're using it to haul around your kids to a soccer game or something....then the EverClear song "Volvo Driving Soccer Mom" comes to mind.
