New Peek at the 2004 Volvo S40
Ahh yes... Volvo finally got the right formula to make a nice looking car, and all they had to do was rip parts of the A4 and Skyline to get there! Anywho... here you go
and here's the money shot...

i actually like the current styling of the volvo's. Its definataly pretty destinctly volvo, with looks dating back to their old square boxy days. Yet it think this one works for them pretty good. Looks semi-sophisticated, yet they can pull a almost sporty look if you know what the car really is. I really like their styling on the sedans, though i really dont like the looks of their wagons. They look like lowered short-buses to me....

Volvo is a conservative automaker. You're not going to get revolutionary looks from a company who is known for their safety. That said, I think it's a big-ass improvement over the old Volvos.

Doesn't even look anything like an A4, it may be shaped the same, but every sedan, like Hal said, is shaped alike. The front is different, the trunk lid is shorter, the body lines are totally different. Basic shape means nothing. It's conservitive, and clean. But, the foglights in the valence there, is right dead smack from an A4. It's an identical piece it looks like.... haha
I like it. |

As far as the actual Volvo goes, I think it looks good for a Volvo, but in terms of all cars, it's the mainstream.

Uggh...why spend 30k+ on a Ford?
All it is is a ford platform with a volvo body and seats. The only ergonomically logical part of a volvo is the seats. The controls are sloppy and random, and they drive like my couch would if I bolted wheels to it and rolled it down a hill.

ack, thats a bummer. At least it wasn't a mercedes/bmw/lexus or you'd pay 5x the amount in repairs...
Few more pics... I like the exterior quite a bit, but not so much the interior center dash, too much wasted space. I don't think its too derivative-looking, looks like a Volvo to me. Seems pretty comfy in there. Top model S40 T5 AWD, 5 cylinder, 218HP/238FT-LB Torque, TopSpeed 130mph. Right at $30K. Last edited by powerclown; 09-02-2004 at 07:42 AM.. |

Personally I don't like the styling. Too often do car companies think that they know exactly what people want in a car, when they really have no idea. As far as a compact sport car, they love to give it odd looking rims, dual or twin exhaust, a wing, and usually a brake package. What sets them apart is the engine. A 2.5L inline 5 cylinder, with dual over head cam, 20 valves, 9.0 compression, power/weight ratio of 14.3, T5 turbocharger, making 218hp @ 5k, and 236 lb/ft @1500, is a decent engine. With a curb weight of 3126 lbs., this car can go fast. That wil all wheel drive, this can be a fun drive.

Nice looking Volvo. Their styling has come a long way since the 80's.

This car has been out in Scandinavia for quite a while. I've seen it around, as wellas its wagon brother, the V50. Personally, I think they are very nice looking. When they put out an S-version of it, I mught consider it. The cool thing, designwise, which doesn't seem to have made it to the states, judging by these picks is the "floating" center-console. Very scandinavian. All in all, I think volvo are going in the right direction. Here is what top gear had to say about the new S40...

I love the looks of the car . Also like the interior and the one inch thick centre console.
Apparently this shares the same platform as the New European Focus. The bonnet bulge looks similar if you took the badges away...

I think this new S40 (and it's V50 sibling) will do real well for Volvo. First off, it's a big improvement over the previous generation S40/V40. They finally have a decent low-end car for their lineup. And I think its styling is right on for Volvo's target market. As was discussed, it's certainly not the most radical design out there, but it does infuse a certain young vitality to the styling of Volvo's other vehicles. It's fresh, somewhat exciting, and still definitely a Volvo. It's a vehicle designed to bring in fresh blood, and I believe it will do just that. Personally, I prefer the more refined look of the S60, but had that V50 been around when I got my S60... well, the decision wouldn't have been so clear-cut.
I think the center console is a neat idea (and yes, we have the slim console here in North America), but since I've never spent any real time with it, I can't comment on its practicality. neat idea, though. |

Not bad, I wouldn't turn it down if it was given to me, but I wouldn't choose it for its style. The side view looks like the trunk/window/hood line slopes down, esp. the 3/4 front right view in the showroom posted by powerclown. I don't particularly like the way that looks, it give the illusion of a droopy front end. In the pic I referred to, it makes the whole line look arched up, making the car look taller and stubbier. I think it would look a lot better if that line were straightened out by leaving the front end exactly as is and removing excess metal from between the bottm and window/trunk line, while increasing the window size, which seems proportionally too small for the overall look of the car.

I was at work when it started to rain really hard so I went to look at the parking lot to see how bad things were. It had rained so hard, so fast, that the water came up to the tops of the wheels. I waded out to my car to see if water was getting inside and sure enough, the floor mats had turned dark black from the water coming inside. I waited for evryone else to move their cars before I tried moving mine, just to make sure I'd be ok. Everyone made it. So then I wade back out to my car, roll down the windows from the outside using the remote and jump in. I got it started easily, drove it 30 feet and then stalled. I knew you should never try to start a motor once its been flooded so I climbed back out, said screw the interior and waited 4 hours for the water to go down then tried again. It clicked, made a half turn then nothing. My new car was dead. Insurance says they'll take care of it so now I'm waiting for the dealership to settle on a price with them and fix it. Volvo says it needs a new engine and the interior needs to be stripped down and dried out but I'm afraid it'll never be the same again. Bastards are taking too long... Anyways, while it was alive it was a flawless car, at least to me. The inside is crisp and has Feng-Shui energy flow about it. Light yet solid at the same time; a Scandinavian trait. The ride is very smooth, the engine responsive and the body feels like it was carved from a diamond it's so hard. I highly recommend everyone at least try one. Of course anything beats my old VW that had so many holes in it that my feet would get wet when it hit a puddle.... |

Huh? Pain Train, are you reading from Gino's Local Racket Pricebook? Those things hardly reach $28K USD.
