I have an old '68 porsche 912 targa that I am considering installing a v8. Truly fits under the topic tilted motors? Any comments?

What does a 912 look like? Post up some pics. Also wouldn't the fact that it is so old sort of make it a clasic. You might not want to cut in to tit like that. Also would a v-8 fit? Either way, god luck, and keep us poseted.

Anything will fit with patience...I once saw a Mazda Miata with a Chevy 454 under the hood.

If that's what I'm thinking of (the 914's little brother), it's worth a fuck of a lot more stock, and will likely appreciate in value kept that way.

If you're looking to butcher something, I'd suggest a more disposable car....

I saw a dual supercharged 350 in a Porsche once. (not IRL, just pics on a site)

No, the 914 was the kid sister of the 916. It's worth barely anything so butcher away if you have one!
The 912 was/is a very early 911.

Why a V8? Doesn't make any sense, and wouldn't sound right IMO. Why not consider fitting a proper, air-cooled flat 6? You could pick one up from, say, a (front-end wrecked) mid '80's 911 carrera. It should just slot in with no problems (a V8 WON'T!!), and with 230+ bhp your flyweight 912 would be an absolute hoot!
If you do this, you might wish to give serious consideration to upgrading the brakes aswell. The wheels, too, could be usefully wider. These cars bite (in the UK English sense of the phrase)! With that much power on standard rims you will slide, and with the engine at the back it could really be a handful if you're not accustomed to the sensation. If you are, however, and have balls of steel - like me, lol - then you could be in for a treat!

I think he wants to put in an american V8 beacuse it's cheaper, and then there is the wow factor. Why take the parts off a 911 when you can just buy a 911? When you add it all up you will spend the same amount.

I can't think of a good donar engine. Subaru flat-4? They can put out 300hp with a turbo and intercooler. Maybe the new Renesis rotory from the RX8? It could put out over 300hp with a turbo and only weighs 150 pounds.

What's a good transaxle? I don't know how much power the 5-speed (if you have the upgrade over the 4-speed) can handle.

In the end I think a stripped down 912, with it's original motor warmed over would make a great Auto X car.

Does the 912 use the 901 type transaxle? They say its good to 300hp.

I have a 901 trans but not sure about how long its gonna last w/ my chevy 4bolt L82 w/ chevy fastburn alum heads, edelbrock airgap intake ~425hp, already saving up for a 915 trans. Welded turbo flares all around w/ RS front and rear bumpers. Not really butchering the car per se, all modifications to accommodate the v-8 really apply to converting to a flat six w/ front mounted oil cooler. If I can figure it out, I will post some pictures

the v8 swap was a fairly common one for a while. i havent actually dealt with any of the kits out there, but i have seen it done before. my only advice to you is plan out everything far ahead and dont get impatient. ive seen many projects, including some of my own, that get shelved because impatience caused a major fuck up.

I say go for it! Guys are putting v8's in rear engine cars all the time. Just take a look at v8 Archie www.v8archie.com, birthplace of the SBC Fiero.

The kit manufacturer estimates its about 40hrs worth of work, take a look at some of these links, these are not hack jobs, FastShark85, the do sell a kit for a 928, I think there's one on renegade's site w/ an LT1 v8...

I've been told you can put a V8 in an MG B-GT. That would be interesting.

I've seen an LT1 in an earlier model 928. He ran sub 14's at the 1/4 and beat every pre-87 model there, including mine. The best I could do was 14.5 with crappy reaction times.

The guy with the LT1 went with that motor after the stock motor was neglected and ruined. A cheaper, faster replacement, but he can't find a mechanic to help him tune it now because of its hybrid set up.

Then again, he has a manual trans and I've got the auto. 928s as a rule are built for high speed cruising. Their gearing isn't conducive to off-the-line quick starts, but they'll crush most cars from 60-100 and top out over 150. The 87 models and up top out over 170.

They're quite good cars, even after so many years.

V8's in any sports car used to be a real passion of mine. My favorites are Sunbeam Tigers and TVR 3000M's/Taimars with 302 Fords replaceing the 6's.

I've seen tons of conversions. Common ones are TR6's, Healeys, MGB's, 240/260Z's, and lately Miata's. Strangest one was a MG Midget with a 350 in it.

Most turn out to be backyard conversions that never really get done right. It takes time and money to get it right.

I switched to 4x4's and replaced the 302 in my early bronco to a 5.0L with fuel injection. Not a direct swap but it is way better than original.

Even cheaper would be a Subaru engine - the water cooling would be a little more awkward to jiggle in, but a flat-four turbo from a Legacy can be had very cheap.

well I just finished installing bigger brakes, new rotors, pads, MC, and s.s. lines, next system up is cooling, then install engine and trans, then finally wire the whole dam thing.

I'm trying to picture the big flares with the early style front.

The RS is one of my favorite versions of the 911 (except for the 996) I just was never crazy over the tail spoiler. To many S's with them tacked on.

Yup that's the RS front, the panel in the bumper is used to vent air to the radiator, mine will have some type of ss mesh. The front turbo flares are about the same size of the white car in your post but the rear is not so large. I had to do some tweaking on the front flares. I will try and post photo when I get home

No, it looks like 911 but only has a tiny 4 cylinder engine. That's why they're virtually worthless.
