Honda Prelude?

alright...i've decided that its just about time to part with my 87 camaro. i love the thing to death, but living in Phoenix where its hotter than hell, doesnt really work with my car. see the guy who i had purchased it from ripped out the AC, so it'll cost me a couple grand to have it completely redone. and when school starts, i'll be driving a good 15 miles to and from school. and the heat is going to take a toll on me and my baby. it also needs some engine work, new carb, new fan, lifters, and its shifts a little funny sometimes when it gets up to temp. so i figure it'd be time to get something new before i end up putting a shitload of money into this one.

so right now i'm looking into a newer car. i had my eyes on the lookout for a 1999 Impreza 2.5RS. they seemed like a decent purchase, but i havent found any that are resonable priced. they all have been modded and shit.

recently it just occured to me that a 96-98 Honda Prelude may be something to look into. they are pretty quick, reasonably priced, and honda has a pretty good track record in terms of making a reliable car. i just wanted to see what some of you thought about Preludes.

here are a couple that i'm looking at right now.

1996

1996 also

1997

so...any imput would be appreciated.

if you go impreza you gotta go WRX. and most people don't mod them, they are modded pretty well from the factory

This generation of prelude is a fantastic car, although I only know about the english variants.

The VTEC is amazing, it was generally reviewed as having the best 4 cylinder engine on the planet (at the time), and a great FWD chassis.

However, those you've listed are the 2.3 liter auto, which isn't quite as interesting. Still a gorgeous car, looks fantastic, reliable as anything, handles quite well.

My dad owns a WRX and loves it. It's probably the only one being driven by a 62 year old guy! But if you're going with the WRX, you gotta go STI!

The trannys are complete junk if you get the tiptronic version of it. Steer clear of that and you should be good - its a damn honda!

I don't recommend an automatic, and you should also know that 97 and 98 manual cars had some shift-fork issues resulting in balky, grinding shifts into 2nd and 5th, eventually leading to a rebuild or replacment of the tranny. Not all cars had this, and there seems to be little method to when they occurred. I drove a 97 Base 5-spd for almost 90K miles w/o a problem from these, whereas a friend bought a 98 new and had to have the tranny rebuilt (under warranty) at about 10K miles.

Overall they are great cars tho if you stick w/ the 2.2L VTEC mill and the manual transmission. Great fit/finish and entertaining performance.

There is also a decent aftermarket for performance parts if that interests you.

you did mention a baby, no?

well if you do have a baby i would suggest the impreza over the prelude. the prelude dont have much of rear seating space.

sat in my friends, i felt more crammed in than a tin of sardines.

alright...i checked out the 1997 prelude. the exterior is perfect, no dents or scratches. i took it out for test drive, and just by driving it, it runs great. it does have a few problems though

1.) its got one of those loud ass mufflers that sound like shit.

2.) the interior is pretty bad. it looks like the guy who had it before redid the entire thing. its all white and red. and a lot of it needs some work. the carpet is torn up in places, the interior paint is scratched up, and it just doesnt look that pleasing to the eye. the pieces themselves look to be in good shape. i would just have to find a good place that specializes in car interior work and see how much it would be to fix it up.

3.) the stereo is all torn out. just an empty space where it used to be. the front speakers are also gone. the back ones appear to be intact, but i have no clue as whether or not they work.

the asking price is $7900, which isnt too bad. i dont know whether or not to really concider this. i might in a few days give some places a call and schedule some appointments so they can give the car a good lookover. i also would want to take it to a dealership and get the engine, tranny, and other stuff checked out.

Moded honda=FUCKING HELL NO DONT DO IT JESUS CHRIST RUN AWAY SOMEONE RAN THE LIVING SHIT OUT OF IT FUCKING DONT DO IT.

Oh, i mean..yeah.

That car will probably have so many problems its insane. Seriously, fart can muffler + painted interior + ripped out system= punk ass teenage driver that didnt know shit about taking care of the car. Dont buy it. Please.

IF you want a fast car in that price range, get a DSM (ecliplse/laser/talon) w/ a turbo and all wheel drive, a first gen (90-94) can be had for about 2500-5000 and a second gen can go up to over 10k, just make sure you do research, but most owners of DSM's take care of them, PM me if you want to know more about the cars, as they are faster than lude's, and look better IMO
