1996 KX80R6

I bought a 96 KX80R6 2 stroke dirt bike and i think i might have locked the engine up. I was riding it today when it ran out of gas. The engine didn't die right away, it just kinda sputtered and slowely died. I pushed it back up to the garage and filled the tank with gas. I have been starting it by push starting it because the kick start lever is broke off. I tried to push start it again and the engine turned over but wouldn't respond when i gave it gas. I let it sit for about 2 hours and try it again. This time the engine didn't turn over. The back tire just locked up and i slid. I think when i ran it out of gas some junk that was floating in the bottom of the gas tank got sucked into the engine. Any advice would be greatly appriated!!

If you suspect there's crap in the engine then you need to tear the engine down and get the crap out, and inspect all the internals for damage before you put it back together.

That is possible, but that just seems weird. Good luck...thankfully, it's not a car engine!

I doubt that it's crap in the gas that's your problem. The reason you mix oil with gas in a 2 stroke is to lubricate the engine. Without fuel, the engine got no lubrication, and my guess is you seized the top end.

Pull the head and take a look, you might be able to get away with a hone and new piston rings.

next time you run out of gas, whip in the clutch and coast to a stop.

I'm pretty sure i didn't seize up the engine. I pulled and cleaned the spark plug today and it started up. It kinda sputtered for a little bit, drove it around the yard, put my helmut on and took it for a real spin. Half way through my ride it did the same thing it did before. I'm going to go get some new spark plugs tomorrow. Hopefully that will solve the problem! Thanks for the advice!

Glad to hear you got it running, but how do you confuse a fouled spark plug with a seized engine?

Several thins COULD be going on here...

1. If you did seize the engine the first time you ran it out of gas (unlikely that an engine will seize just from being out of gas) it is possible that the piston ring got welded to the cylinder wall. Upon trying to jump it later you can break the ring lose and the engine will run (not very well but it will run).

2. The "crap" from the gas tank (or water, or a build up of gum if the bike has been sitting for a while, etc) could have F*ed your carb. Turn the petcock from the gas tank off and remove the float bowl (at the bottom of the carb there is a bowl with a big nut under it). Take this nut off, there will be gas in the bowl so have a bucket handy and put something on the ground to catch what you spill. Look at the gas in the bowl to see if there's any water in the gas or if there's any gunk in there. If there is you will need to either clean the carb yourself or have someone else do it.

You are premixing the oil and gas correctly right? If not the engine may have already (or will soon) seize.

I would check the carb first and then pull the head to look at the top of the piston and the rings. If they look clean (not pitted or blackened and the rings look okay) then I wouldn't bother pulling the cylinder. If the piston looks pitted, or the cylinder wall if scored then you're gonna need to rebuild it.

If you want tips on rebuilding just shoot me an email (pmoravec at blast dot net)
