Sorry that is not drifting, that's doughnuts and stunt driving, and Joey Chitwood did it better. Drifting was invented by the first driver trying to go fast on a dirt road and found a little sideways around a turn was faster. Was used a lot by later racing drivers. Your link was a bit of showy nonsense.

Depends what kind of racing you are talking about, dirt trackers use it all the time, road racing is a bit different but it can be used sometimes, the drift just isn't as extreme. Actually anytime you go around a curve at any kind of speed (more than a walking pace) there is some degree of drift, that is just how a tire works.
I, for one, do not accept this new definition of the word 'Drift', it had a perfectly valid meaning before these meatheads got hold of it. Last edited by thedoc; 12-18-2010 at 08:06 PM.. |

IMO some drifting is entertaining and it does require a talent for that type of driving.
I'm more interested in traditional road racing where "excessive" sliding as exhibited in drifting shows is never the fastest way around a track. |

The derision is hilarious.. this takes amazing skill and its awesome to watch. 峠 has been around as long as most other motorsports.. as soon as someone with enough horsepower to break the rear end loose realized how amusing it was. I'll watch this over drag racing any day, and it's just as much a "performance" as a race. The distinction here is wasted. It still takes the driver and the car right to the edge of their ability and power, just like circuit racing or drag racing.

Sorry Jinn, but the current use of the term 'Drifting' is just showmanship, and anyone could do it if they wanted to waste their tires. No particular skill needed just a little practice. Stunt drivers do it all the time, it's probably stunt drivers on their day off from doing real driving.
