Mike Conway driving the Dad's Root Beer sponsored car ran into the IZOD car driven by Ryan Hunter-Reay as the IZOD car ran out of gas in the middle of the 3rd turn on the final lap. Conway had no where to go. It launched him and his car hit the catch fence. Luckily he only sustained a broken leg and a compression fracture of one vertebra. He had surgery to repair his leg and will be in a back brace for three months. Hunter-Reay was not injured in this accident although requires surgery to repair a ligament in his thumb that was torn earlier in the race when his car was hit slightly in the pits. Both drivers are exceptionally lucky. Two spectators were slightly injured by debris.

Uneffingreal, I held my breath the entire time, I wanted to reach in and grab Conway, but I was just frozen by awe at the accident unfolding. I swear I recoiled internally when Mike went over Hunter-Reay, I thought he was going to take Ryans head off, just amazing that neither were seriously injured, amazing! TuG

Thanks bobby, my husband will enjoy watching this again, and Craven Morehead, those still shots are breathtaking.

amazing and I'm happy no one was seriously injured. I suppose that's a testament to both the advanced safety equipment/design of the racecars and luck/blessings.

It reminded me of an Indy Torontoi accident a few years back. I can't remember who it was with Rahal, but he spun out and I believe Paul Tracy ran right up over the car. I thought for sure the driver was decapitated, but he walked away with a few bruises and a burn or 2 if I recall.

I just love people who use the excuse "I use/do this because I LOVE the feeling/joy/happiness it brings me" and expect you to be ok with that as you watch them destroy their life blindly following. My response is, "I like to put forks in an eletrical socket, just LOVE that feeling, can't ever get enough of it, so will you let me put this copper fork in that electric socket?"

Are you thinking of Brian Herta and Alex Barron at Road America? Rahal was in the lead (was his last year as a driver) and Herta (his team mate) spun into him at the corner. Then all hell broke loose. I was there and watched it happen. I was sure Herta was in serious trouble but no injuries to either driver
